Baby Names

Asher or Archer?

Asher or Archer for a boy?
Do you like one better than the other? If so, why? Middle name would be James for both.

Asher
pros: softer sound, biblical name Older DS is Samson, like the nickname Ash;
cons: too trendy? seems to be becoming more popular we know three little boys named Asher

Archer
Pros: less popular ?, similar in look and sound to Asher

Cons: don't like the nickname Archie

Thanks!

Re: Asher or Archer?

  • If I had to pick one, I'd pick Asher. An archer is someone who shoots arrows.

  • I'd go with Asher based solely on your nn preference, but I like both.
  • I like Archer best. I think it is cause I hear it less than Asher, and I dont like Ash as a nn. Archer is the name of the fx cartoon character, so some people might notice that.

They are both becoming a bit more common in my area.

I would choose Archer. I don't really like Asher.

  • I love Archer, but DH hates it so it's off the table. If you don't like Archie, introduce him as "Archer."

I am having dj vu here. OP did you ask this before? This same thing came up about a month ago. You may google to see if you can find the thread. I think there were quite a few responses.

    Archer, btw.

  • I prefer Archer and don't see a need for a nn.

Although, I do have a name crush on Asher. While I am hearing it more I don't consider it a common biblical name like Jacob nor do I see it becoming as common as Jacob or Matthew.

With DS#1's name, I think Asher is the better fit.

It is a very common biblical name.

That may be true, but I meant it's less common than other biblical names like Noah, Luke, Jacob, etc. And I've never met an Asher.

  • Thank you so much for the feedback so far!

It seems to be trending slightly towards Asher. Since my main concern with Asher is the potential popularity/trendiness, it's good to hear that some of you think it's not too trendy/more classic. It seems like there might be regional differences (I didn't know any Ashers in the mid-west, but now have meet three since moving to the pacific northwest).

Go with Asher. You have more pros for it. Clearly the winner in my books!

I love Asher.  I wish we could use it, but it's hard to say with our last name.  I know it's become much more popular recently, but I think biblical names are always classics.  I don't mind Archer, but I definitely prefer Asher.
