Cloth Diapering

Homemade laundry detergent

I often use homemade laundry detergent on my regular laundry and I was wondering if anyone has a good recipe for diapers. The formula I use for clothes has borax, washing soda and fels naptha soap. I have read that the best formulas for diapers do not include the soap as that can cause absorbancy issues (which I agree with as I think I have noticed on some of my dish towels.)  I have seen recipes like hers: https://theecofriendlyfamily.com/2009/08/cloth-diaper-detergent/ that some people like, but then I have read things like this:

https://www.thirstiesbaby.com/blog/homemade-is-not-always-best/

that say the borox or oxyclean would be bad too.

Is it best to just spend the little extra and not make it myself or are there some formulas that are okay?

Re: Homemade laundry detergent

  • Well mine is 1 cup borax, 1 cup oxy clean free and 1 cup washing soda so I guess mine would be considered "bad"...

  • I use equal parts baking soda, generic oxyclean, and washing soda. Works great. Must be the generic brand that only has sodium carbonate and sodium percarbonate in it. When it comes down to it the ingredients for my homemade are sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium percarbonate, which were the same exact ingredients as the Ruby Moon detergent I bought. Of course I don't know the exact proportions Ruby Moon uses but equal parts seems to work okay. I use 2 to 6 tablespoons in my regular top loader depending on the load size. I've only been using the homemade for a month but so far no issues. I used Ruby Moon for a month before that.

This is the recipe I just made over the weekend.  So far so good.  I guess we'll find out down the road if it doesn't work.  I'm using two scoops (using the scoop from my country save) for clothes and one scoop for diapers.

I do the exact same.  Been using it for a few months.  No issues at all.  2-3Table Spoons depending on how many poops are going in.
