Re: Signing

  • I say "change diaper."

You put your hands up in two fists in front of your chest facing each other and rotate them around each other, like you're twisting something in your hands. Then diaper, you take both of your hands and tap  your index and middle fingers against your thumb on your hips, like diaper pins. When she was really little, I signed diaper up higher, closer to my face, where she could see, but now I sign it correctly.

  • Oh, and A doesn't typcailly sign the change part when she asks for a clean diaper. She only signs "diaper" or will sign "poop diaper."

  • My son is deaf so we are signing everything. I think you just signing diaper is enough. and you can find videos on youtube that show you different signs

  • FTM I know of signing but had no idea people used it for diaper changes. How old is you LO and when did you start?

Thanks! I wasn't sure whether to sign change or diaper or both, haha.
My LO is almost 10 months. We started signing at 4 months, but she just recently started signing back. She signs milk and done. But we are working on more, and I just decided I wanted to try diaper change too.

  • I try to sign as many words in the sentence as I can. I am by no means fluent, but would like to continue in my own education of ASL. I hope for A to continue showing an interest in it, as well. So far, it's working and she is showing an interest in being verbal and still signing, often at the same time.

That's great that A is doing so well. E only has the 2 signs but I'm not even sure how much she understands. I'm just glad she's trying. I wish her DC was better about it. They said they taught signs but I've never seen it. And I don't really know much. Thanks for the tips!

  • I think it was about that age that A started signing, and then from there it took off. I think even if her DC isn't being consistent, as long as you are you will probably see an explosion of signs in the next couple of weeks.

You should check out SmartHandsCA on youtube. She does baby signing, and her videos are great. She explains how to do the sign (and the way she explains makes it so easy to remember) and then shows videos of how her babies sign, too. It helped when I was first looking for signs from A, because obviously she didn't sign perfectly from the get go. Smile

Good luck! I really feel like it helped A a lot in terms of her frustration levels and tantrums, because she was much more easily able to express what she wanted before she was verbal.
