Cloth Diapering

Totally overwhelmed

Hi all, I need your help and expertise.

I have always intended to CD and registered for BG Freetime diapers as I really like the idea of OS, AIO.  Flash to 6 weeks ago when my son was born prematurely.  It was totally unexpected and I hadn't had a chance to finish my research.  So far, we have 3 Freetimes and the diaper sprayer but we've been using sposies since he was born as the Freetimes don't fit yet.  He's getting bigger (yay!) and I'm thinking we can make the switch soon.

I can't believe how little time I have in a day to finish out my research before buying the rest of my stash.  Am I crazy to think that I can have an entire stash of only Freetimes?  I know I'll need a wet bag and a safe detergent (I'm glad to read that Tide seems ok).  What else will I need?

I'm sorry to have to ask for help.  Besides being sleep-deprived, I'm so overwhelmed by caring for my wonderful boy (we're having breastfeeding issues) and trying to finish getting everything we still need.  Lesson learned - be prepared EARLY!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

ETA:  If I do end up with only Freetimes, how many would you recommend?  He's going through 7-10 diapers a day now but I believe he'd use more with cloth.  Does 25 seem about right for washing every other day?  Thanks again!

Re: Totally overwhelmed

  • First of all, congrats on the new baby!  I can totally sympathize with the sleep deprivation, so don't feel bad if you aren't ready to dive all in at once.

25 diapers is probably about right to wash every other day, but it doesn't hurt to have an extra dozen for growth spurt days.  I highly recommending the ones you have a try before you buy the rest of your stash.  It's hard to know you'll like a particular type until you try it on your LO.

As for other CD items, you will need 2 wetbags (one to wash, one to use while the other is in the wash), CD safe diaper rash cream (CJ's BUTTer is my personal favorite), and cloth wipes (I just use baby washcloths myself with a little water squirted on).  It also doesn't hurt to get a small/medium wetbag for the diaper bag.

    Best of luck!

Everyone here will tell you to try a bunch of different types before buying a full stash. Before I knew better, we bought a full stash of Freetimes and they have been great. I have bought a few others here and there, didn't care for pockets, love my best bottoms, but the Freetimes are still our go to diapers.
We had 24 Freetimes to start with. We can wash EOD with that, but it's nice having the cushion of our other dipes if we want to stretch a third day from time to time.
We use tide, and coconut oil for diaper cream if she's red. We have 5 wet bags for DC and home, but if you SAH you won't need that many.
Congrats on your new baby, and GL with CDing, it's addicting and so fun!

Thanks SO much to you both!  This is excellent advice and it's great to hear I'm perhaps not as far off track as I'd feared.  I hope I'm ready for this adventure!

  • We used prefolds and covers for the NB stage but then I bought 20 alva pocket diapers and love them. I've gotten a few other diapers used for super cheap but still love my alvas. Since you already have the freetimes try them out to make sure they fit well and then I say go for it. We don't regret having all alvas at all. We do have one freetime and it's a little thicker of a diaper but very absorbant. We have 25 diapers and DD is 9 months and we have plenty to wash every 2 days vs EOD.
