6 month freezer stash?

My SIL said that she will BF until 6 months and then evaluate her situation, meaning if her DS is teething and biting her, she might stop.  I asked her if she'd then switch to formula with the addition to solids.  She said no formula, because she'll have a big enough freezer stash to last her until her DS is 1 yr old.  She has a separate freezer chest which i've read keeps the milk for 6 months.  I'm guessing she'll slowly stop BFing and pumping after her DS reaches 6 months if she's getting bitten.

Aside from the fact that many people believe that you should push through teething and keep BFing because it's better than frozen milk...is this a feasible option?  I never thought of being able to use frozen milk for that long.  She's had an oversupply ever since her baby was born and has been filling a 5 cubic ft freezer ever since then.  Have any of you done this or know someone who has?

Re: 6 month freezer stash?

  • If it's kept in a deep freezer it's good for 6m, so if she's rotating her stash I don't see why this would be an issue.

  • If you have to use donor milk, it's frozen.  I wouldn't think it would make a huge difference, even though fresh is probably better.

  • Fresh is better but frozen is still good.  Frozen will lose some of the antibodies that fresh has.  If her LO gets sick if she is still BF then her body will produce the antibodies that her LO needs and those will then be in the breast milk.  If she is just using frozen milk that will not have those antibodies.
