NCDR Snot

Disclaimer: If you gag at the thought of snot, this post is probably not for you.

DS has had a cold for about 10 days now. I attributed it to teething and/or allergies at the beginning, but I'm not sure now. He's only had 2 other colds, and they both ran their course within 10 days. He also usually only has a clear, runny nose. This time his sinuses are very congested, and his mucous is yellow-green. I have used saline spray and a nasal bulb several times a day from day 1 of the cold, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Are there any other natural remedies that can help alleviate his congestion and all this disgusting sticky green snot?

Put a pillow under the mattress so LO sleeps propped up a little. Use a humidifier. Put LO in the bathroom with a hot steamy shower running. Poor LO, hope he feels better soon.

  • I second a sucker. Although we have the baby comfy nose. I think the difference is that with the nosefrida you need to buy their filters and with the comfy nose you can use tissue.

Also, have you considered allergies? I know a lot of people say babies can't/don't get them, but i swear mine has. Even last summer when she was itty bitty she would get red, watery eyes.

  • I've been curious about getting a snot sucker, but I hesitate b/c DS absolutely HATES it when I suck out his nose. Do the Nose Frieda and Baby Comfy Nose seem to bother your babies?

I wouldn't be surprised if he had allergies b/c mine are so bad. I have heard other moms talk about using Zyrtec or Claritin, but I hate for him to go on something like that when he's so small. Since I can't give him honey yet either, I'm not sure what to do to try to treat for allergies naturally.

  • I would definitely elevate the mattress so his head is higher.  It helps to drain and alleviate the pressure from his sinuses.  As far as a humidifier, a cool-mist humidifier in the room works wonders.  Use a bulb syringe (or the NoseFrida, we just don't have one), saline spray, and steamy showers in the evenings.

Hope your little one gets to feeling better!

  • We have the mattress elevated. The problem with that is that he moves so much he usually winds up at the "foot" of the crib. I will break out the humidifier, though.

  • DD does not like it at all when I suck out her nose. But I just keep doing it. She breathes so much better after I do it. She had never liked it though. And I'm guessing wouldn't have liked a bulb sucker either. She's just one if those kids who doesn't like her nose played with.

The Nosefrida isn't the most pleasant thing ever, but L seemed to tolerate it better than the bulb syringe. And she really does ask me to do it when she's stuffy. Ill pull out enough snot for a grown man.

My LO tolerates the NoseFrida better than the bulb, too.  I think it's because it doesn't go in her nostril as far.  She doesn't love it, but if I give her an interesting toy and do it when she is not hungry/fussy, she tolerates it pretty well and you get out some pretty stubborn snot. Sometimes I do have to hold her arms down. Tip: you need something to wipe/blow the snot onto before going back to get more out.  I either use a kleenex, or a burp rag
