Parents of 3-6 year olds, come in

I am a stepmother of 3 aging from 3.5 - 6 years old. We have them for two weekends in a row Fri PM to Sun PM, an off weekend, rinse and repeat. They constantly talk about farting, pooping, burping, peeing, and everything in between. I mean, constantly. Is this normal? Am I expecting too much out of them that they not talk about it? We've mentioned it to their mom several times and her response is "they're just kids" meaning - she doesn't have an issue with it. They even tell me her boyfriend "throws farts in their faces" and rolls the window up if he passes gas in the car. So, for 1-2 weeks it's ok and then they come here and it's not, so that's confusing for them.

Should I just let it go?

  • I guess it's hard to expect them to act mature when it doesn't sound like the adults at the other house are.  I think you can ask/remind them not to discuss such things, but I wouldn't make too big of a deal about it - unless they do it in public.  Maybe don't focus on it too much and they won't find it that exciting?

    Who's there?

    I see

    I see who?

I see you with poop on your head.

I heard that recently in my house. So yeah, it's normal. We don't encourage it and we do try to reinforce what talk is appropriate when. I let go the occasional talk and jokes, but I'm not going to listen to it all day long every day.

  • Normal... BUT, I do think some of this is based on "household norms".  In my house growing up, people didn't fart in front of others unless it was an accident.  In some homes public farting is fine.  So I think that for your step kids, it's hard for them to know what the expected behavior is since it is different in each house.  I have an 11 SS (that has been with me, on weekends, etc since he was 3) and I know that it can be tough for him to adjust to our rules vs his moms rules.  Choose your battles and be consistent and the kids will eventually adapt to the rules at both homes... But you may want to put your foot down when it comes to something like home work rules, not farts :-)

  • DD 4.5 constantly farts at the kitchen table and then laughs.  I am constantly telling her it's unpolite.  I think as other posters said it comes with the age.

  • It *is* normal.

So what we do is this:  We say "You are going to get X minutes where you can talk about poop ALL YOU WANT" and then we say "GO" and make a game of it and join in.  Then when the timer goes off, it's not allowed.  When they mention it again, we tell them they need to save it for our next random poop talk session.  Too many infractions result in the complete and total loss of our goofy poop talk session.

I was going to say it wasn't normal. Then I read other PP's.

    So, I agree with kgopel.

We don't do public stinkers in our house unless it's an accident, of course. I couldn't stand that. I can handle dumb jokes and comments to an extent.

Lol I don't really like the word fart. IDK why. Is it really common to stink up the place on a daily basis?
