Pee Through Mystery!

DS is a super heavy wetter - at night I use a FuzziBunz perfect fit with a fleece liner + 2 hemp inserts behind the microfiber one. This works great, but only if he's wearing polyester footie pajamas. If I put him in cotton jammies, without fail he pees through right around the leg holes! I've even had times where I just had put him in the diaper/jammies and he pees through within 10 minutes.... it's driving me crazy. What gives? I'd love to put him in cooler jammies over the summer so I don't have to air condition our house as much but I can't solve this dang mystery. Any thoughts/suggestions would be MUCH appreciated?

Re: Pee Through Mystery!

  • My only thought on this is that cotton wicks, so if the leg holes are gapping at all the pee can run right out the leg and onto the pj's. We had to stop using pockets ON for this very reason. Once I got enough absorbancy stuffed in, the legs gapped. You could try using bamboo inserts. I have heard they hold more than MF and hemp. Or you could switch to something different for ON. We also intentionally use polyester pj's (especially microfleece) b/c they don't hold the damp feeling like the cotton does. We do have AC, though, and DH likes it cranked up at night.

  • Are you adding Ina fleece liner? Because you don't need to do that, FB have a stay dry layer already.

    Do the legs gap?

The leaks are happening in the fleece PJs, too, but the properties of the fleece pajamas are keeping the leaks contained, whereas the cotton will get wet feeling.

I'm only using the fleece liner because more often than not I have to use desitin or aquaphor on him. He has ultra sensitive skin so I'm constantly battling diaper rashes.

I have the diaper on super tight, and when I first button him up and zip up his jammies there are no gaps, but little man is a very active sleeper, so maybe all the moving and grooving is creating gaps? Especially since the diaper is huge from all the inserts I have stuffed in there.

Maybe I need to switch to fitted's + a fleece soaker? I hear you can't put jammies on over a soaker through.....arg. What a pain! Maybe I'll just have to stick with warm jammies + air conditioning after all.

  • I would start with a PUL or wool cover. Fleece soakers can get compression leaks and stink, especially for ON. You can use the inserts you already have (though no MF can touch his skin) or get a fitted.

Can absolutely put pajamas on over a soaker. Or the soaker can be the bottoms. Or you could get shorties.

All of this. You can also put a fleece soaker over a pocket diaper to prevent the diaper from wicking onto cotton jammies. We did that for a while til we got fitteds.
