Cloth Diapering

Feeling discouraged, please help!

New to CDing and need some help!  We've used disposable up until now...

We tried BG Elementals and didn't care for them at all...they seemed really bulky, didn't fit well, and took FOREVER to dry.

We're now trying BG 4.0s and like them better since they dry more quickly, keep LO drier, and fit better in the legs. However, I still feel like they're incredibly bulky.  (DD is 3 mos, 13 lbs, but long and skinny).  Is bulk just something we need to adjust to with CDs?  Are the other styles or brands I should try?

Also, every time she pees, she screams...she'll actually stop and wait for me to open the diaper then pee all over the changing table.  I initially thought she was reacting to the soap--we used Charlie's Soap at first, then switched to Tide powder, and the 4.0s have only been washed in the Tide--but even with the switch she's getting upset when she goes.  Does she just need to get used to the diapers?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Feeling discouraged, please help!

  • In general, CDs are going to be a little bulkier.  Something sized will probably be less bulky than anything one-size though.  There are definitely trimmer styles as well like prefolds and covers.

The screaming while peeing would concern me.  That shouldn't be caused by the cloth.  Do you think it's pain?  Or maybe she doesn't like the wetness?  Obviously you're using a stay-dry option with the 4.0s so she shouldn't really be sitting in wet.  She definitely would feel more moisture with the BGEs though.

I'm not sure on the pee problem.

But the bulk is something you need to deal with for CD.  You can always switch to a bamboo insert, which will be trimmer.

  • There are some diapers that are trimmer than BG, although all are a bit bulkier than disposables.

I'm not sure about the screaming/peeing issue either. Our cousin's DD would always get really made when she wet her diaper, and they always used disposables. Even though it sucked up the wetness, she just hated the feeling for a while. I think they just had to ride it out until she grew out of that phase.

  • CDs don't HAVE to be bulkier.  However, "One Size" diapers are going to be on a bebe that small.  I despise "one size" diapers and always buy exclusively sized dipes.  If you are wanting pockets, I recommend the Thirsties Size 1 or Applecheeks size 1.  Both will fit your LO about a million times better than a gigantic BG OS dipe.

As far as the yelling / detergent question - it is possible that Tide is a problem.  There are many people who use it successfully.  But there are also many (like us) who did not.  I would try something a little gentler.  We use Vaska, which is very affordable and can be found at Target.

Re the screaming, she could have a UTI. It's not uncommon. I know at least 2 baby girls that had it in infancy. Has nothing to do with CDs.

That's what I was thinking. Have you tried putting her in disposables for a day to see if she reacts the same way?

I've found CDs to be very bulky. It's my least favorite thing about them. I have Kawaii Pure and Naturals for my 7 week old. Everyone says they're supposed to be very trim. I find them still to be bulky, and I even replaced the microfiber inserts with a much thinner bamboo/MF blend. Right now DD3 is only 9 lbs, so that may be part of it. The PN fit up to 22 lbs, so they are smaller than OS diapers.

I second the UTI suggestion.  that's what it sounds like to me.

As far as trimmer options - I really like BabyKicks diapers and AppleCheeks for trimness.  Fuzzibunz are also trimmer, but I've never used them.  As another PP said you can also get bamboo inserts (AppleCheeks makes a nice one, and I think Alva does too.) to stuff your BG 4.0s with.

    Both of these things.

I also think that PnNs are bulky on a NB, so we only use them at night. People who say they are trim on a NB are crazy, haha.

I would definitely get some bamboo or blend inserts since they're much thinner and try those...alva ones are awesome and super cheap. Otherwise, you could always try sized instead of OS. I'm actually appreciating the bulk on my skinny almost 8 week old...makes her clothes fit better!

I agree. Part of the problem with detergent that has enzymes is that the enzymes react with the pee, so it can irritate the skin. Diaper Jungle has a chart that rates different detergents. You might find it helpful. We use liquid Biokleen. Our local health food store sells it, and it's super cheap!
