Baby Names

Is this name too weird?

So I've liked the name Amaryllis as a sort of GP name for more than ten years now, and brought it up with DH lately. Surprisingly, he actually really liked it. It's a flower name, associated with resurrection, and pronounced "am-uh-rill-is." We'd probably use it for a MN.

Possibilities involving this name--

Mary Amaryllis

Hester Amaryllis NN Hettie

Rachel Amaryllis

Also, a random question: how do you add a second ticker on your sig? I pasted in the code, but it's not appearing. Any special format?

  • I love it! Growing up we watched a lot of classic musicals & there's a little girl in The Music Man with that name. I always thought it was so pretty.

  • I LOVE flower names-- this is gorgeous.

Before we settled on DD's MN (which we changed last minute to Pearl), I was hellbent on giving her an A middle name- so her and my H would have the same initials.  Our two front runners were Adele and Amaryllis.

I am especially drooling over Mary Amaryllis-- that would be my pick!

I don't know about the ticker though.

  • Really like Amaryllis as a MN but not too crazy about Mary, Hester or  Rachel.
  • Well, I finally got the second ticker up! Excellent!

To address previous comments--I cannot believe I didn't notice that "Mary" is already spelled out in Amaryllis. That's not a deal-breaker necessarily, but something to think about. We really like Mary and have about seven different MNs for it already, some of which we'd use as double names. Girls names are much harder, it seems like, we've pretty much decided on the boy name already.

  • Love the name, for some reason especially with Rachel.

It's not my cup of tea, but it's not too bad in the middle name spot. I would not like it AT ALL as a first name.

In terms of your first names you suggested, I like Rachel but am not a huge fan of Mary and definitely dislike Hester.

That's where it's from! I kept saying to myself that it sounded so familiar as I read the OP.
  • I really like Rachel Amaryllis! Try saving your changes to your sight a few times. That worked for me!

  • Music Man!  I auditioned for Amaryllis in a school play!  I like it.  I like Rachel best.  Hester - although a legitimate female name - sounds too harsh/masculine next to a floral/feminine middle name like Amaryllis.

  • I don't think I'd use it for a first name, but I'm fine with it as a middle! I like Mary and Rachel with it!

I like both Mary Amaryllis and Rachel Amaryllis.

Yes, Mary is technically part of the name Amaryllis. However, since the pronunciations are totally different, I don't think it's an issue.

I generally like flower names, but due to a very random association which I won't get into I can't get on board with it as a FN.  I think it's fine as a MN though, and I like all your FN choices.

  • I love, love, love this name! If I had my way, DD1 probably would have been Noelle Amaryllis. It's my favorite kind of flower.

  • I think it's beautiful in the MN slot.  It has a really nice flow as a MN because the stress is on the third syllable, which is unusual and prevents it from sounding to sing-songy with most first names.  I like Rachel Amaryllis best of the 3.
