Mastitis? Help!

I have been feeling very engorged all day on one side, no matter how much I feed baby and pump.  There's a very painful lump near my armpit and no matter how much I massage and pump, it doesn't go away.  I know it's late in the game to get mastitis for the first time, but I've only been back to work for 6 weeks so I'm afraid the change in feeding/pumping schedule affected this.

Tonight during my last pumping session, I noticed a yellowish residue that stuck to the bottom of the bottle.  It's not fat that separates to the top, but a sticky yellow layer on the bottom.  Is that pus?  Is it a sign of mastitis?  Did I just gross everyone out?

My temp is 100.4.

Do I call my OB/GYN?  Urgent Care?  I don't want to call my GP because she's terrible.

TIA!

  • I never had pus when I had mastitis. I was achy all over and I couldn't lift my son because it hurt too much. (He was only two months old). What helped was getting on meds, hot showers and or compresses, letting him feed on that side/or pumping it, and resting.

Yes, you'll need an antibiotic ASAP. Definitely sounds like mastitis especially since you have a fever.

  • Yeah girl, you need to see a doctor in the am, stat

I never had mastitis. I do think I had a clogged duct that I thought was leading the mastitis route. It started with a lump and hot spot, a fever and aches. I did what Sarah listed above. Hot showers and massage. A hot compress on the spot, and then let your LO feed facing the lump. So put her on your breast with her nose facing the lump. And then lots of rest.

Definitely call your OB/GYN in the morning. But for tonight I'd do above. Mastitis can lead to being very sick, so the sooner you can call the better. Hope you feel better soon.

I'd call right away. I called on a Sunday and the on-call Doc prescribed me meds right away. Hopefully there's a pharmacy near you that's open late or one you could get to first thing in the morning.

If you have a fever that means the infection has already begun which means yes it is mastitis. You need to call OB ASAP. You need to start antibiotics right away. I noticed my lump at 8:00am I had fever by noon and by 4:00pm I was getting admitted to the hospital with 104.00 fever could barely walk and ended up in there for 3 days on IV antibiotics.

Don't mess around with this call!
