Moms who switched from BM to FF...

We are struggling big time with our little guy. He's colicky, fussy, gassy, sleeps terribly, won't lay on his back. Our pedi has ruled out reflux and is now suggesting cutting out dairy. I've gone through painful thrush and am currently battling mastitis. I go back to work in 2 weeks and am stressed out to the max with all of this!!

DS1 was FF but I really wanted to try with this baby. But it is just so many obstacles and I'm wondering if a soy formula might just be better for us all.

I'm just wondering if anyone else had a miserable BF baby whose temperament improved with formula. I'm getting desperate!

Mine is much happier now, and so am I!  I was really sad when I gave up BF at 6 weeks, but between bfing, supplementing with formula, and pumping I was so tried and stressed!  My LO is on meds for acid reflux and was really gas as well.  She was SUPER fussy too!  We found out around 5 weeks that she had a bad latch and that was the reason she wasn't gaining weight like she should of been...and why I think she was so fussy!  Now she is on formula for gassy babies and seems to be doing so much better.  Less spit up and gas, and now her tummy is finally full and she is much more content and easy to deal with.  It's a hard choice to make, but it might make you both happier in the end.  GL!

  • You could do like I did regarding the dairy sensitivity. We gave lo only Prosobee for a few days and I pumped to keep my supply. We froze what I pumped for now. During that time I went dairy free. Then we went back to feeding breastmilk bottles as lo is just now starting to be able to latch on but he does not have the suckling down yet so I still have to pump and bottle feed when he is done nursing.

Going dairy free is intimidating at first, but does get easier.

  • We started with the bloody diapers at 6 weeks. I cut out dairy and soy but after 2 weeks the diapers were getting worse not better. So for 10 days I pumped & bagged while he ate Alimentum. We went back to BF when I had been dairy free for 3 weeks and in 48 hours the yucky diapers and fussy gassy baby were back. So now we're on Alimentum full time. Just a warning, I hope that the soy formula works for you but a lot of babies who have the dairy issues also wind up having soy issues. But hopefully you'll get lucky because the soy formula doesn't require having a 2nd job. ;) Best of luck - we finally made the decision that a happy healthy baby was more important than having a breastfed baby.
