"Don't Got No..." (Rant)

At dinner last night my SIL says to her 7 year old son, "Did you finish your homework?", to which he replied "I don't got no homework". Made me absolutely cringe.  I said to him "Ryan, you DON'T HAVE ANY homework".  He thought I was questioning him, so he says in a hissy fit tone "Didn't you hear me the first time!?! I said I don't got no homework!!"  What drives me most crazy is that MH and I are the only ones who try to correct him on it.  I am sure he is corrected on it when he is in school, but if nobody does at home, how is he ever going to learn? Ugh.

I'll bet he's not corrected in school as often as you think.  There are a lot of teachers who speak like that.  As a teacher (Hell, as a person) this drives me insane.  But he won't ever learn and soon the world will talk in text.  My students try to turn in papers written in text.  I give them an F until it's corrected to English.  (Their parents think it's fine that they speak and write like that.)

Ugh, so sad!  I mean, I understand that as the times change, so does slang, but phrases like "don't got no" are not slang and just make people sound like morons.  I hate to think that even the school systems are not always on top of correcting such improper English.

J I agree it is terrible to say "Don't got no" but was he giving you attitude when he said, "Didn't you hear me?" If he was they should have corrected that also...

He was absolutely giving me attitude.  He and his sister talk like that to adults all the time and very rarely are disciplined.  And if they "disciplined" it is an empty threat about 95% of the time.  For example, they will be threatened with no dessert if they don't behave, then they don't behave and guess who still gets dessert?  I always ask him nicely to act politely and respectfully because Sunny is watching everything he does and we want him to set a good example for her.  But it needs to come from his parents and grandparents (who are FREQUENT caregivers, too frequent, IMO).

  • I don't understand people who don't teach their kids to be polite. Kids that are polite are liked so much more by people and it sets them up to have a better life.
