Cloth Diapering

Compare: Lil Joeys & Grovia NBs

Been doing some research on NB diapers and was wondering if you ladies had any reviews of Lil Joeys & Grovia NBs.  I will say that the double gussets on the Lil Joeys look like the would be fantastic for newborn poop.  Can anyone weigh in on the absorbency of either of these brands?  I can't tell by looking the Grovia if they have a stay dry layer inside or not, anyone?

Any newborn diapers you would recommend or advise to stay away from (open to Etsy diapers also)?  I am planning on getting a couple of Swaddlebees, maybe a Totbots Tiny Fit (anyone have any reviews on these?), and I am NOT getting any BG newborn diapers (absorbency is horrible in these).  I will probably get a couple fitteds for nighttime, but we are not planning on doing prefolds (my DH hates fitteds, there is no way he would go for prefolds), if anyone has any fitteds recommendations for the newborn phase/

  • We tried Lil Joey's, Grovia NB, Bumgenius Newborn, and Totsbots Tiny Fit, along with lots of different covers with prefolds. Our favorite AIO was the Tiny Fit by far. It's the only one that you can add extra absorbency to, which meant it lasted well beyond the others since he outgrew the absorbency on his other AIO'S wayyyy before he outgrew the size. My next favorite was a Lil Joey's. My third was Bumgenius. My last favorite was the Grovia. It leaked almost every time we used it. FWIW, we actually liked prefolds and covers more than all of those others.

  • I know some have an issue with them but we looooved our ljs. They take a while to dry but fit both differently shaped twins great. I never got a good fit with the grovia nb, always weirdly happy at the waist on both kids. I haven't used them but have only ever heard good things about the swaddlebees nb. Most people say things like "if I have another baby, I will make my stash exclusively those" and such. They also are meant to fit pretty well for a good long time without growing out of absorbency. Good luck with it all, tiny cloth diapers are adorable.

  • We couldn't get a good fit with the grovias which were the only aios we had. I loved our kissaluvs size 0 fitteds with thirsties covers or prefolds. (My husband doesn't like anything except aios and pockets, so I just chose to do most of the changing or he put ds in sposies)

  • I loved lil joeys. The absorbency worked til 4 weeks, and for days til 6-7 weeks (no big leaks before then). They still fit great at that point and they fit the day she was born. The grovias were okay. They had a bulkier fit at birth, and the fit was never amazing. The newer ones are stay dry, the older prints (airplanes) are just cotton, we had both. Both grovia we had a lot of wicking because the cotton goes right to the serged edge.

  • Hated Lil Joeys, they leaked every single time. We didn't start using them until 4 weeks though (LO was probably around 9lb by then, though they did fit well). They are tiny so they wouldn't have fit for long. The only other NB diaper we tried (and now use all the time) was Swaddlebees Simplex and I LOVE them. You can add extra absorbency, though we never need it (he wears OS diapers overnight). They fit fantastically and seem like they will for a while to come. They do not have a stay dry type of liner, as they are 100% cotton, but that doesn't bother me as we only use them during the day so he gets changed pretty frequently.

Ditto this.  Grovia NBs are the only AIOs I had, but they leak through the leg holes a lot.  I wish I'd gotten some Tinyfits - I ADORE my Easyfits, so I'm sure I would have loved the Tinyfits, since they're the same design only smaller.

  • I also had difficulty with my Grovia AIO leaking around the legs due to wicking. I wish I had tried it with a cover over it. I had a few LJs that worked pretty well, but the absorbency on them was short-lived. Also, if I remember correctly the double gussets are different than double gussets on covers, so they're not totally bulletproof with runny NB poop. If I had it to do over again, I would try Swaddlebees and just add a microfleece liner. (DS hated to feel wet when he was a NB.) And unless your DH is doing more than half of the diaper changes, I would totally recommend getting fittted, flats, or prefolds and covers if you want to try them.

  • Could you add a bamboo NB insert instead of a NB MF in your diapers that aren't very absorbant to prolong their life? That's what I would do if you like little joeys. I would put the alva NB bamboo insert right on top of the little joeys so I wouldnt have to stuff it.

I did this with hemp kissaluv wipes and it did improve the absorbency, but LO pretty much fit into OS by that point.

  • I put Logan in a GroVia today because he finally fit, and he leaked in under two hours. I wasn't impressed. Maybe it is because he is a month old and peeing too much? I have had him in his lil joeys and they haven't leaked yet.

I tried to add an insert on top and couldn't find anything that wouldn't make it gap at the legs because of the inner gussets. I had some luck with adding a flannel wipe to give us a little bit of a boost but that didn't last long.
