Contemplating going back to work...

Hi all,

Curious have any of you gone back to full time work after being home for a long periodofntime?   I left my ft career 4 years ago, and now I am starting to want to go back as dd starts kindergarten in the fall and des will be over 2 and needs some sort of program to keep him active. Just a little nervous about it all...any good advice?

I have been working part time from home the last couple years so I am ok with the workforce more nervous about figuring it all,put again?

  • I took a year off and it has definitely been an adjustment.  I'm a teacher and I feel like a lot of things changed in my district in the year that I was gone.  I am happy to be back at work and now that we have a system down, things are going smoothly.  Obviously, I was not gone as long as you were but having a plan and then being willing to adjust the plan, has helped me stay sane.

I took nearly 3 years off. My advice would be to draft a daily schedule and know that it will be trial and error. After a while, you won't need a tangible paper schedule, you'll just know what your schedule is.

Be sure you are going back to a job that you like since you will be spending a lot of time there. It was a big adjustment for me. My bedtime as a SAHM was 10:30 pm. When I went back to work I found out that I needed to change it to 8:45 pm. Working FT EVERY week did not work for me, so I started adding in leave time to have a mixture of part-time weeks, which some are leave without pay.

As a side note, when I went back to work, I really enjoyed it. I guess because I enjoyed my field before DS was born. Also, pick out clothes for the week for your children and for yourself and take your shower the night before.  Also, your husband has to help more around the house now.  I also found that cooking on the weekends for the week works out well.
