DS had a great weekend at Grandma's (MIL an SFIL's) while DH and I had a great weekend away. DS has been sharing little details about his weekend since we got back. He's even started prefacing the details with "when I was at Grandma's". It's the first time I've noticed him understanding he needs to give context information so others know what he's talking about.
I took DD1 owling on Friday night, and we both had a lot of fun. It was a class at a little nature center, and we got to learn about owls first, then go out to see a nesting mama. DD1 was so excited, and SO good -- and she was by far the youngest one there. I'd explained to her that she needed to be quiet and not disturb the mama, and so she would remind me if I talked too loudly and I have to say, she was better behaved than most of the big kids who were there and bored. She even learned how to use binoculars.
She had her first optometrist appointment today, along with DD2, and they both did awesome and got tons of compliments on how brave they were. They had the retinal pictures and even the air-puffs and were such troopers! We've noticed that DD1 is very sensitive to bright sunlight some days (I was, too, as a kid), and wanted to make sure everything was okay.
DD got her gait trainer yesterday! She isn't moving on her own, yet, but I cannot wait to see it! Also-side note- my mom had surgery today (mastectomy) and is doing well in recovery!
Lily took several good spoonfuls of mashed potatos last week. That means she opened her mouth when the spoon was presented, had good lip closure when the spoon was in her mouth, had appropriate tongue movement and managed to swallow the mash potatos without gagging. Most days, she'll do some combination of these things. But, never has she done all of these things at once. It was like she was a typical child, at least for those few spoonfuls.
DS2 is an amazing eater. He's probably still not typical as he's not on many table foods but he will eat like 2 large jars of baby food 3 times a day. He opens his mouth, he'll grab the spoon and shove it in his mouth. He will scoot and wiggle to get to food or a bottle and he'll hold his own bottle.
It just brings so much perspective to how difficult feeding issues really are. DS1 is still a horrible eater. He LOVES to eat and can consume a vast amount yet struggles with the oral motor skills of eating and maintaining his weight. I have been practically counting every swallow since he was born (he spent 9 days in the NICU for immature suck/swallow) and it's amazing to a have a big chubby baby whom I don't think twice about food with.
To my boys: I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
DD was very interested in "ABC time" during her new signing time videos! She started trying to sing the song right after it played, then later though in imitation stood up mulitiple times for her grandparents singing and "signing" the abc song
I don't care if it's imitation - it's a start on ABC's!
DS has been really into pretend play with his toy dinosaurs! It's still a bit scripted but I am seeing more spontaneity with it. I love it!
Also, he had an OT evaluation through school, even though we aren't really concerned in that area. The OT said he rocked it and many of his skills were actually quite advanced. After hearing about delays so often, this feels good!
