If you've used multiple sizes of GMD prefolds...

Did you go through all of the sizes?  What I mean by that is did you start with newborn and then continue to buy each size after that as your baby grew, or did you skip some?

I have the orange edged that I got for DD's newborn stage. She's 4 months and almost 13.5 lbs. but since we decided we're going to continue using prefolds beyond newborn, I'm still trifolding them into covers. I change her often enough that they don't leak or anything.

I also have red-edged from when I tried them out with DS.  There's 2 sizes between the orange and red but I don't think I really need to buy either, the reds will probably be ok soon enough...

Do most people buy every size?

  • My thoughts on this are to get away with what you can get away with.  If you have to invest in every size, that is less money you're saving.  I really like the fitteds but they are pricey.  There is no way I could buy 15 in every size, my plan is to make them stretch as long as they can and then move up with I have to and make it work until it fits perfectly.

  • In your case I think you'd be fine skipping the yellow/smalls and going directly to the reds/mediums. GMD yellows are 10-15 lbs. GMD reds are 15-30.

I think it would be silly to buy yellows for a 13.5 lb baby, especially if you already own reds. She will probably be 15 lbs before you finish prepping them!

If you decide you want to just trifold, though, it might make sense to have a few yellows depending on what kind of covers you have. The medium GMDs are too long to trifold the right way into a Flip cover on the medium setting (which is so annoying to me), but they are great in a Bummis or Thirsties cover.

ETA: I think I started using the reds with DD at about 13 lbs.

  • ds has been in the red edge for about a month now so he was about 12.5 or 13 lbs. i just fold down the front to get the length right on him.

i agree with pp that the yellow edge are much easier to trifold in a cover.

i switched to the red edge at that point because the yellow edg was getting rather tough to snappi.

I think I'll actually try Snappi-ing when we go into the reds.  I have a bunch of Snappis but could never get the orange to wrap around front enough to do it, not even when she was first born. I think it might be time to start trying out the reds.
