1st Trimester

first doc appt at 11wks

I don't get it. I called to make my first appointment since I am about 9weeks along. But the lady said they do the first appointment between 10 and 11 weeks? When did it change? My youngest is 8months old and I had my first appointment with him when I was 8weeks. And I don't know if it matters but this is my 6th pregnancy in 4yrs and I only have 2kids.

Re: first doc appt at 11wks

  • A lot of practices are like that. My office doesnt do them u.til after 9 weeks because any earlier and its kinda hard to really see much. I was bleeding at 7 weeks and the ultrasound couldnt pick up a heartbeat and couldnt really see much besides a blob. I went back at 9 weeks and everything was fine. You also called later than a lot of women. Most women call around 5 weeks and set up their appt. I think its pretty unreasonable to call and think you will get an appt that same week without an emergency, the schedule is usually pretty full.

  • It has always been like that for me and my family. My first appointment was never before 10wks, my first appointment this time around will be at 12wks. There is not much they can see or hear before 10wks anyway, and unless you are high risk there really is no reason to go in. I only get one u/s during my whole pregnancy (unless they feel more are needed) and that is at the anatomy scan at 20wks.

  • This pregnancy I am going to a midwife center; they schedule the first appointment between 9-12 weeks. The OB for my last appointment scheduled the first appointment for 12 weeks, if I remember correctly.

My clinic scheduled my first appt at 10 weeks exactly...then got mad at me for coming in "too early". They couldn't hear the heartbeat with doppler, so ended up with an ultrasound. Which, once again, they tried to say was my fault because they normally don't have peoplw come in till 11 to 12 weeks.
