Gagged on Puffs

I got B some puffs and some Baby Mum Mums. He wasnt crazy about the Mum Mums but he rather liked the puffs but he gagged on the 2 or 3 that I gave him. Is that just in response to having solid food in his mouth or was he slightly choking? I was breaking the puffs in half.

  • This is what made MH read the thing and decide I shouldn't give them to Raylan anymore... I think it's a learning thing.... but we're going to hold off for now just the same.

Sawyer did the same thing with them.  I think it is just a learning thing, plus this is an entirely new texture for them.  I don't really think Sawyer likes puffs but we will keep trying!

  • It is totally a learning thing. Gagging is not choking. Babies need to learn to move food around their mouth to learn to eat solid foods and they will gag.

I've actually heard that delaying finger foods can increase the risk of choking later because they haven't learned the skills when their gag reflex is farther forward in their mouth.

Puffs also dissolve so there is nothing to worry about.
