Had 12w appointment but no ultrasound, is this normal?

I had my 12 week appointment yesterday with my new ob. It was my first visit with get since switching from my old obstetrician. She's getting my records from my old office, which was nice because I didn't want to have to have more bloodworm done, but she didn't to an NT scan... When I had my DD I got an ultrasound at 12 weeks, so I was slightly dissapointed I didn't get one this time, because I wanted the pictures : also, because I wanted to do the scan to make sure there's no issues with the baby that I might need to prepare for, since i was told by my okd ob they HAD to do this scan before 13 weeks or it isnt accurate. LUCKILY, my obstetrician does gender scans at 16 weeks :. So when I go back for that in 4 weeks they will also check for Down syndrome and spina bifida. I jut thought it was odd since I was told it had to be done by 13 weeks. I want to make sure I'm getting the care I should be and that nothing is going to be missed by doing it at a later date. Did anyone else only hear the heartbeat at 12 weeks, instead of getting an ultrasound?

  • It is totally normal to just listen to the heartbeat and not get an ultrasound at your 12 week appointment. Everyone doctor does things a little differently. Also, you're still getting screened for DS and SB, just at a different week.

  • I got to listen to the heartbeat with the doppler-they confirmed the pregnancy was viable with that. No ultrasound until the a/s because I did not want the NT scan. If they have no reason to believe anything is the matter there is no reason to do an ultrasound. Every office is different.  With my first they do an ultrasound at the first appt no matter what.  I was over 15 weeks so they could have easily checked with the doppler.  With my second the office only did early ultrasounds because I had a lot of bleeding.

It sounds like you need to communicate with your OB. I do remember them measuring the neck? at an appointment well past 13 weeks with my second to check for chromosome abnormality markers.

  • My clinic only does NT if you request it. I had a dating ultrasound at 8 weeks and was told NT is optional. If you want the NT for medical reasons call and tell them. I think most doctors won't do it unless you fall into a higher risk category or you request it.

  • I can't imagine not wanting the NT scan. My doc does everything bc it's better to be informed.

Every OB is different. Also, NT scans should be done between 11 and 14 weeks. At my OB's office, if you are not "high risk" , they won't do an NT scan unless yu request it. I requested it. Also, I would rather wait until 18+ weeks than have my gender scan at 16 weeks, for better accuracy, but that's just me. FWIW, I spent $30 on a fetal doppler off of Amazon and now I can hear my LO's HB anytime I want- I love it, but my OB whips out her doppler to check the HB at each appt starting at 12 weeks.
  • As PPs said, every OB is different.  My 12 week appointment will not include an ultrasound.  In fact, they said if I want a NT scan, I need to tell them, then they will give me an order and send me to a different office for the scan.
  • I am not having an NT scan.  Recent studies have shown that they are only 86% or something like that, accurate.  The scan between 16 and 20 weeks is the most accurate due to complete development of the baby.  hope that helps.

  • I actually got a ultra sound at 9 weeks. But that was for dating reasons, yesterday at my 12 week she just talked to us and got to hear the heartbeat.
