Cloth Diapering

Hemp Insert Question

My LO (almost 5 months old) has been using BG pockets for about a month now. They work very well for us during the day when we change him every couple of hours or so but at night he was having issues leaking. After reading reviews/recommendations on this board I purchased (to start with at least before I went to Obish or a wool cover of some sort) adding a hemp insert. I purchased two Thirsties hemp/cotton inserts from our local cloth diaper store and at night I just laid it against LO's skin right on top of the diaper. It has worked wonderful and we haven't had a leak at all. However, now my dumb question- am I not supposed to lay this against LO's skin and should I have stuffed this in the pocket? I thought since it was cotton it could be laid against the skin?

Edit- changed for spelling error

Re: Hemp Insert Question

  • Hemp is fine against the skin.  Natural fibers like hemp, cotton, and bamboo are perfectly fine against the skin.  Putting in the pocket would just help keep it in place at night. :)

  • It's fine to use against the skin, but I always stuff into the pocket so that there's a "stay dry" layer to help keep pee off his butt overnight.
  • So far as I know, the only reason most people don't use hemp directly against the skin is because it can be slow to absorb, causing leaks. It is a natural fiber and fine to have against LO's skin...so if it's not leaking, it should be fine for you!

If it does start to leak, you may want to put it behind a faster absorbing insert.
