Cloth Diapering

Prefolds and Diaper Rash

Do you use a liner with your prefolds to prevent diaper rash? If so, what kind? We have been using only pockets so far, but I want to add some prefolds, especially since we will be doing a lot of travelling over the summer. We have had zero diaper rash with the pockets and I would like to keep it that way. TIA!

Re: Prefolds and Diaper Rash

  • DS went through a rashy stage around 2-4 months, and I tried fleece liners and raw silk liners. Neither seemed to help much, and IMO the liners were more trouble than they were worth. It was much more important for us to just keep him changed as frequently as he needed it.

DS eventually outgrew the sensitivity, so now we only use liners at night with his fitteds.

My advice would be to give the prefolds a try, just as they are, and then troubleshoot with liners if you have problems. Don't make additional work for yourself if you don't have to.

This.  I've found that the natural fiber actually breathes more than the synthetics of our pockets, even with a PUL cover.  So when he's a little rashy, I put him in a prefold!

  • No liners here, even overnight. I had fleece cut up for the purpose, but DD has never been rashy in a prefold and we use them often.

  • We only use liners overnight. We use old scrap fleece cut up to the size we needed. I also agree about Being less rashy with natural fibers. If my DS is looking a little red I will stick him in prefold/cover for a few changes and he's back to normal. This was after about 23 months. Until then we did use liners most of the time.
