Teacher Bumpies

I'm so irritated. In one of my classes, I have 7 people failing out of about 30 and no one has an A. Normally, I'd take this personally, but this time I'm not. This is the laziest bunch of 18 to 20 year olds I've ever met. Most of the F's are for people who are either not showing up or just not turning in their work. I'm so frustrated because it is now past the point where I can drop anyone and I've told them all they are responsible for their own grades. They just don't care and now this average is going to be a black eye on my reputation. Ugh! What is going on with these kids nowadays?

Re: Teacher Bumpies

  • They don't care and they don't value education. They are not held accoubtable/responsible and dont care about consequences. Most of my students dont even respect or fear authorities/cops getting arrested. I teach high school in an inner city and have mostly 10th graders this year and by far the worst students in my four years of teaching. I have one class of 9 and only three students are passing, another of 18 where only 4 students should pass. They don't understand the word cheating and do it constantly and thanks to nclb they keep passing because we can not fail that many students. And now college level are seeing those same students who really should have failed and are thinking they will automatically pass just because, like they did in high school and middle school. Yup I gave a lot of 40s and 50s last MP and don't care that is what they earned! Sorry to rant but I feel the frustration too...

I'm not a teacher, but I work in the schools. The level of apathy in my schools is disgusting. Kids just couldn't care less about school work. It's cool to not do the work and get bad grades. I have kids who do their homework every night and then not turn it in because they want to cool. Then they get mad when they fail. It drives me batty!

Our school started the one to one laptop initiative this year and my grades are horrible. I would agree that most don't care. We did some word problems yesterday and 90 percent of them didn't even try. What's worse is that there are more and more parents telling me they can't control Theodore children. Wtf? No wonder they don't even try! No consequences for them!

  • Even in kindergarten many kids don't care. They are disrespectful and you can see that so much of it comes from the values they see at home. It's disheartening for sure but his is my fourth year and the worst (sorry to say for kinders) group I've had by far.

  • I have found that a lot of students are again very apathetic. Also they are lazy, anything that is "hard" they don't want to try at all. I get told that what we are doing is too hard all.the.time. its not hard they just don't want to think or try!

I started out subbing in the public school I went to. I was horrible. The kids were so disrespectful and unmotivated from K to 12. It is not the school I went to anymore. Now I work in an alternative school, so this stuff is expected. The funny thing is I dealt with more disrespect and students refusing to do work in the public school than in the school for "troubled" kids I am teaching in now. People always tell me it is not too late to get out of the profession.

  • You guys are right.  There's just a complete lack of motivation.  I realize I'm only at the community college level, but when is the initiative supposed to kick in?

  • I've seen graduating college seniors miss out on getting their degree and graduating because they didn't put forth the effort to pass their classes. One student in particular was upset that she got a C in my class when she only showed up half the time. The grade reflected her level of commitment to the class. I did not feel sorry for her when she failed other courses that were prereqs for her capstone classes. She just didn't try. I'm seeing that more and more with each semester. Students just think the teachers are going to hand out passing grades. Luckily, in the short time that I've been teaching at the college I'm at, the administration is finally recognizing this and starting to attempt to turn that around so that the students have to earn their grades rather than whine and complain about it and get extra credit to pass.
