Have you heard the old wives tale that you will have a child with a lot of hair if you have heartburn during pregnancy? If its true, this kid is coming out with a six foot pony tail!
Johns Hopkins University did a study that set out to disprove the OWT, and actually ended up confirming it. Obviously it won't be true for everyone (as per PP's sister's experience) but the correlation is strong enough that they're willing to state there is some truth to it.

LOL! I asked my doc this question because I have horrible acid reflux and heart burn. The doc even pointed bout that my baby has a lot of hair he could see in the US.
Doc laughed and told me no it's a total old wives tale. I still think it's funny. I'll blame my reflux and heart burn on my babies beautiful head of hair HA!

I have heard of the study but have yet to see it work for anyone I know. I have killer heartburn each time and my kids are pretty bald until near 2 years old. Same has happened for my sisters and cousins and friends. Only one friend has had a baby with any real hair to speak of.
EDIT Maybe this one will be the one with some hair.
I wish this held true for me. Both of my girls had very little hair until 2. DD1 got a trim right before her 3rd birthday just to clean up her shagginess. DD2 still doesn't even have enough to get trimmed and she's a few months over 3. I'm afraid this one will be the same. I live off Tums and Zantac and papaya. My mom was the same way with me. I was pretty much bald until I was almost 4. I would love to have something to show for this heartburn and reflux.
held true to me. DS1 I had no heartburn. he came out with one single patch of hair on the back of his head. He was bald otherwise. DS2 I had heartburn like a mofo- and he was born with a head full of brown hair. I have heart burn now with LO, and at one of my 4D ultrasounds the tech said he had hair! We shall see...but I think he will have hair, just like his brother did.
I had moderate heartburn with my first, and she came out with a shaggy head of black hair... Which is funny because I'm mousy (blonde as a child), and my husband is blonde. All her black hair fell out and grew in blonde... And now she's almost two and still has boy-short hair.
There is actually some link between the hormone that produces hair and heartburn or something.
That said, ain't true for shitt with me. I had terrible heartburn with DD and she was bald for a year, lol. She's over two now and still doesn't have enough hair to get into a ponytail.
The heartburn and reflux are WAY worse this time. I'm on three Zantac a day right now as a preventative plus Tums as needed and my OB just referred me to a gastroenterologist because I'm aspirating acid at night after barfing it up. I'm basically destroying my esophagus, ugh. I doubt this baby will have much more hair than DD1.
Yikes - yours sounds worse than mine! I am on Zantac but still feel awful every Tim I lie down. Chewing gum helps a little but overall I feel the heat all the time. NLT three weeks to go though!
I had heartburn with my previous 2 and both of them came out with head full of hair. Curls galore!! I have had mild heartburn with this one but I am not quite 3rd tri yet and that is usually when it picks up.
It's the one that has some truth to it although it's not a hard and fast rule. Google brings up this almost right away. I think it's a pretty succinct way of saying it.
Of all the old wives? tales out there, most pertain to pregnancy. Whether it be about how you carry the baby (high for a girl, low for a boy) or that wearing a Hawaiian lei can choke the baby (it can?t, nor can raising your hands above your head!) one that is freakishly true is that mothers who experience heartburn during pregnancy tend to have hairier babies. In an analysis of 64 pregnant women (granted, not a very large study) conducted by Johns Hopkins University researchers, women that experienced the most heartburn while pregnant gave birth to babies with average or above average newborn hair coverage. Exactly how it works is not clear, but researchers speculate that it is less a case of one causing the other and more that they share a common cause.
I had my LO April 11th, and maybe had heartburn 6 times throughout my whole pregnancy. Only one time it was bad enough to take Tums for it... DD came out with 2 inches of hair. Doc said her hair was born an hour before she was! Lol
Hb only 6 times?? Wow - you are lucky!! Congras on your lo!
ty! Yeah all the docs and nurses were shocked when I told them how little heartburn I had. I'm so excited for you all to have your babies! It's so amazing!

So essentially, corralation =/= causation and so on.
However, if it holds true then my baby will have a ton of hair! We'll see!
