"normal" size?

I've never really let the fact that I have a big boy on my hands really bother me, and I don't let other people's comments bother me about how big he is and they can't believe he's that big for only being X number of months old. Rylan was 22 pounds when he went into the doctor for a rash about a month ago. The fact that he is big is just normal to me, but he's hardly into any of his 12 month clothes yet (though I do squeeze him into the smaller sizes for as long as possible) and I know there are other big boys on this board too (and big girls? I can't think of any who come to mind). After this past weekend when I had a woman approach me and ask how old he was and then exclaim "wow! He's HUGE!" it brings me to wonder... if my baby is big, then what is the norm? What does the general population think a normal size baby looks like if most people either are surprised at how big a baby is or how small a baby is?

Feel free to use this post as a weight check in as well, for all our "normal"-sized babies, big and small.

Re: "normal" size?

  • people in general have no idea what size a "typical baby" of X age should be.

I get told al the time..."oh!  he is big"  then the same day someone will say "he's a little guy".

    People = clueless

  • DS was 22 lbs 11 oz and 28 inches long at his 9 month appointment 2 weeks ago. We where told he was 50 percentile for height and weight for 9 month olds, however since he was a premie they compared him to 8 month olds based on his adjusted age. This put him in the 75 percentile.

  • D is 9 months and weighs 16 lbs and is considered "tiny" to our friend. Her son is 10 months and weighs 25 lbs.

No clue what "normal" is. Somewhere in the middle?

  • We'll get the "official" numbers on Friday at DS's 9-month appointment, but he's about 30" and 21 pounds. I think he's pretty much following his growth curve of 90% for height and 50% for weight. Basically he is long and lean.

He is starting to grow out of some of his 9-month clothes.

  • I get the big boy comments a lot. I don't think people really know what average is, they just spurt crap out of their mouth trying to make conversation.

I think ds just looks big, because he's really short. He's about 22lbs, and 26 in.

  • Mathieu was a big boy and was like 24lbs at 9mo. At about 1.5yrs old he started leveling out and now at almost 3 he weighs 34lbs.

Rhett is about 19 maybe 20lbs now.

People are idiots and are constantly putting their foot in their mouths. I wouldn't worry about your LO's size.

  • Our lo always gets the same comments, "he's so big!". At our last appointment for Lucas about 2 weeks ago (so about 7 1/2 months) he was 22 lbs, and 29 1/2 inches long. The major thing with him is his length. He's currently in 18 month clothes for his length, the middle where his tummy is is all baggy.  It looks funny!

  • I think people really have no idea. DD is in the 10th percentile for weight, and I still had a stranger tell me she's so big.
  • Like with anything, there is no 'normal.'

My first was HUGE - like off the chart weight and height huge. He is still incredibly tall, most people think he is 9 years old. He is 6.

B is on the same path weighing in at 22 lbs at 9 months. I make big boys and I Looooooove them that way!

  • Ollie is long and lean. He's 30.5 inches and 20.5 lbs. off the charts for height and 40 percent for weight.
People have no idea because everyone is different. I guess you could say that a "normal" baby would be 50 percent for height and weight since that percentile is the "average".
Ugh. Mobile ate my percent signs.

  • DD is 8 months and 22.6lbs I haven't measured her in a while. She has been around 85% for her weight and 95% for her height all along. I get people all the time saying what is she 2yrs old now?? Ummm no 8 months. It doesn't bother me. I am 5'10" and DH is 6'7" we figured that we would have a "bigger" baby.

  • I get the she's so big comments every once in a while. She's always been about 50% for weight. It never bothers me but I did take her to the ER once about a month ago and the ER Nurse said "gosh shes a BIG girl" and I said "uh no, she's really not, she's in the 50% for weight and 60% for height...so she's just right" It just seemed to bug me that time because I brought her there for breathing difficulties and the medically educated nurse is making her sound like a hippo, when 1) shes not and 2) she was eff'ing sick...focus on that!!  LOL that was the only time I ever corrected someone on it

  • C was a little over 20 lbs at his 4 month visit, but hasn't gained more than a pound since then. He has gotten soooo tall though. Our pedi checked the charts and at his 6 month visit said he was the height of an average 15 month old. Yeah, we get the big guy comments a lot.

  • I usually just get the "wow, he is tall!" comment. I have no idea. at his 6 mo (which happened at 7 mos) appt he was 17.6 pounds and on the 50th percentile, but at 28.5 inches he was 92nd. I usually just assume whatever 50th percentile is would be "normal" since it is based on the normal distribution.

  • I hate how ppl say such and such is small or such and such is big. Kids grow at their own rate. If the dr isn't concerned, then ur good!

Some kids are bigger than average, others are smaller however if Anyone knows the BMI's knows this rule drs go by for percentages, isn't very good.

My cousins has a son, she is in the shorter side, and her son is 12 and he weighs 60lbs but he is just over 4 feet, and apparently the dr says he is obese according to BmI.

  • Last week a lady told me she thought B was 16 months old.  What???
  • Keith is 23lbs. He just turned 8 months. People tell me he is big all the time. Don't let it get to you there are big babies and small babies just like there are tall people and short people.

  • DD is over 22 pounds and not yet 9 months so she is a big girl. I hate when that's the only word they have to describe her.

  • At his 6 month appointment, Elijah was 19 lbs and 27". He was 50th percentile in height and 60th in weight, so he's almost perfectly average. We get the big baby comments all the time and I just roll my eyes. He was 10 lbs at birth so he has probably just recently doubled birth weight. Whateva, whateva.
  • O was a few ounces shy of 23 lbs at his six month checkup. I don't think he's not normal. My doctor says he's a gorgeous healthy baby and anyone else can suck it!

  • I have no idea what "normal" is either. Don't worry, if he is healthy, that's all that matters.  I hate how this comparison thing starts from day one.  Good for you for not really letting people get to you! I have the opposite problem--people always comment on how small DD is, like I did something wrong to "make her that way."  She's just petite.  People have asked if she is a premie and are shocked that at 8 months she can still wear some of her 3 month clothes.  She's gaining weight and height, that's all that matters :)

  • DD1 was also "big" but eventually she averages out.  DD2 now at her 6m appt was 18lbs and expect at her 9m appt this month for her to be close to 20lbs if not more?so I think they are just healthy!
