BM to Formula...help!

So I have EPed sonce Fowler's early arrival in Dec. Despite working SO hard to keep my supply up things are starting to dry up!

The doc and I decided to use my fresh and frozen supply and add some formula to each bottle to help stretch the length of time he gets bm and help his tummy adjust to the formula. She suggested we start with enfamil gentlease as it is partialy digested. At first he did fine. A few days in I noticed He was a little less setteled. Now he will only take about half his normal amount if the formula is in there. He will fuss and arch his back and he has gas.

I know this is our first formula and it can be hit or miss but I just wondered if any of you had switched successfully? It may be more difficult for him to switch because he has been on bm for 4 months but I just hate feeding issues! Makes me feel guilty...even though I know its not my fault because he has had such a rough start and I feel like I'm causing him yet another problem!

Re: BM to Formula...help!

  • We went from BFing to Similac Sensitive for fussiness and gas. It has low lactose so if your LO is lactose intolerant this may help. We love it.

  • How old is your LO?  We had a lot of trouble with gas & fussiness between 5-7 weeks & thought it was the formula.  We did lots of switching and finally landed on Similac Advance &/or Similac Total Comfort.  However, in retrospect, I wonder if maybe it was related to a growth spurt and/or developmental things with his tummy troubles.  ???  Hang in there...  It's really hard to watch them struggle.  Our LO is 8 weeks now & is doing much better getting things out.  :)

  • We switched LO from Enfamil Gentlease to iron fortified Similac a few weeks ago. I've also reduced the amount of breast milk I've been feeding him because my supply has dwindled. I've been giving him a bottle of it every few days because, since I still have some milk, I figure I might as well still pump and collect it to give him some for as long as I'm able to.

I've noticed that our LO has been more difficult to burp over the last week. I'm not sure if that's related to the change in formula and or reduction of breast milk he's getting. His bowel movements have changed greatly...from frequent liquidy, seedy and mustard coloured BMs to infrequent pasty, green coloured BMs with a really foul smell. I know this is a result of the formula change and reduction in breast milk.

When LO's BMs started to change over the weekend, he was quite gassy and fussy. I could hear his guts gurgling but nothing was coming out. Things have gotten better over the last couple of days but he's still not able to get all of his burps out.

  • We actually jumped around a lot with formula, we also tried gentle ease but since its so thin LO was spitting up a lot and seemed super fussy on it.  We switched him to Similac advanced and so far so good!!

  • Fowler is actually 4 months...but was due 4/1 so he is 1 month adjusted.

The thinness and easy to digest were supposed to be the reasons the doc reccommended gentle ease.

I too have noticed he does not brup as well this last week...wonder how that correlates to th formula?

I think we are going to try a 'regular' formula and see what type of reaction we get.
