3rd Trimester

Swelling

Hello I am 32 weeks pregnant and within the last few days my feet and ankles have really started to swell! of course my OB told me yesterday it's normal, to just elevate, but I really don't have that option until bedtime as I'm constantly on the go. I was wondering if there's anything else I can try? Epsom salt? I do drink a TON of water. Thanks!

Re: Swelling

  • My OB said the same thing and didn't seem concerned at all. I get the swelling in my hands and will sit at my desk w. an ice pack to keep some of it down. Hoping it goes away post- delivery. Smile

  • You can try wearing some compression hose, but really elevation is really the only relief I've found. Good luck.

This. My Ob gave me a prescription for compression hose. I would ask your dr. about them.

  • My dr's office suggested lemon in your water.  Good luck!

  • Wearing sneakers helps me (over flats or flip flops or anything).    Also elevation, which I know you said you can't do until the end of the day, but maybe you can try to take 10 minute breaks to elevate throughout the day.  Water is a must, but you know that.

My doctor basically said the swelling is normal and will only get worse, but for me it's gotten better because I've been elevating at my desk (just 8 inches) and doing the other things I listed.

I read about exercise and cutting out junk food will help too, but my exercise hasn't changed (I walk the dog daily and walk to/from the subway) and I haven't changed my diet from what it was.

  • I upped my protein and lowered my sodium intakes.  That really seems to do the trick for me.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies! I do know I need to cut back on sodium too. It's my #1 weakness and poor habit. Today I took a day to myself to stay in bed and elevate and it does seem to be helping!
