October 2013 Moms

This may sound like a silly question but....

how do you calculate how far along you are. I'm due 10/9/13. I have the What to Expect app and it says I'm 16 weeks and 5 days. But everyone wants to know how many months you are. Do you figure out from your last period or from your due date? I'm not sure if I'm like 3 1/2 months of almost 4 months. Anyway...thought you ladies would know :)

Re: This may sound like a silly question but....

  • week 4 you are 1 month

week 8 you are 2 months

    etc...

It is calculated from the first day of your last period, 40 weeks in total, or 38 weeks from date of ovulation. That's all approx though.

  • 16 weeks would be 4 months. Also, your due date is calculated from your LMP, so you I would think there would not be a difference in how far along you are if you used one or the other.  Typically people use their LMP to say how many months they are.

  • I went by my dating ultrasound, it was harder for me to figure it out since I had irregular periods so if I was going by my LMP I would be due in august not October lol

  • 4wks doesn't equal 1 month. If you follow this logic then your pregnancy would be 10 months long. I find it easiest to work from due date. On your due date you will be 9 months pregnant, so on May 9th you will be 4 months pregnant, five months left until your due date.

    This!

Also if you said 4w equals 1 month that would mean that we have 13 months in a year since 52/4= 13.

  • dude, I just throw a close enough number out there. "about 4." Whatever. It's not like they're realy keeping track, more often than not they're just asking to be nice.

Uh, ok, but isn't a pregnancy actually roughly 10 months long? 40 weeks from LMP, right? 40/4=10?

That's exactly what I've been doing. But then when I say about  4 months they ask if I know the sex and I tell them my 20 week appt is at the end of next month. Then I get a confused look - hence my question. As long as there isn't a hard fast rule that I'm not following for calculating the months then it's all good. :)

    Thank you, geez!

When people ask me, I just tell them how many weeks I am and let them figure it out.  I don't keep up with the months.

I usually use the number of weeks too, but yesterday Hubs's grandma specifically said "Don't tell me weeks. What month are you in? When I was your age we talked about it in months."

Of course this led to further issues because I told her I'm "in my 4th month," meaning that I have completed 3 months and am in the midst of the 4th month, but she'll probably go around telling everyone that I'm 4 months along already. Oh well. (I also explained to her that they actually start counting based on LMP, which completely blew her mind, of course.)

I like PP's suggestion of working back from the due date. Mine is 10/11 so on 5/11 I'll be okay with saying I'm ~officially 4 months.

  • You are 'pregnant' for 9 months and 1 week exactly. (ignoring the fact that you aren't really pregnant the first 2 weeks blahblahblah =) ) And Feb gets a little confusing but...My LMP was January 4th and I am due October 11th...9 months and 1 week.

There are more than 4 weeks  (28 days) in a month, so no, you are not pregnant for 10 months. Sorry its a pet peeve of mine...10 months would be correct if we went by lunar months, but we don't. so.........

I go by weeks, but I will consider myself to be 4 months on May 4th, which is 4 months since my LMP.

  • I have the WTEWYE book and this is how they break it down

    1 to 4 weeks equals 1 month
    5 to 8 weeks equals 2nd month
    9 to 13 weeks equals 3rd month
    14 to 17 weeks equals 4th month
    18 to 22 weeks equals 5th month
    23 to 27 weeks equals 6th month
    28 to 31 weeks equals 7th month
    32 to 35 weeks equals 8th month
    36 to 40 weeks equals 9th month

All approximation of according to the book. My dr actually this chart in the office as well.

  • In my opinion, all of the pregnancy date tracking is wack.  You are already 2 weeks along when you conceive if you go by the usual 40 week theory.  And I agree that if we are going to consider 4 weeks=1 month mind set, then you are pregnant for 10 months, but technically give birth (hopefully) within the 9th month so you are considered 9 months pregnant.

week 4 you are 1 month

week 8 you are 2 months

This would be what I call the simplified method.  Some women hate this because it's simply not accurate.  4 weeks = 28 days which only = 1 month once a year.  To me, this is certainly easier, but then you would be pregnant 10 months using this math.

Just count backwards from your due date.  I'm due October 29, so I'm exactly 3 months.  If I go by the simplified method, I'm 14 weeks, so I'm 3.5 months.

Either way, it doesn't really matter.  Just pick one and round. Most people aren't going to check your math. lol

  • I usually just tell people in weeks. But as far as I'm concerned 4 weeks= 1 month.
