Toddler "Gagging Self with Entire Hand, Sometimes After Eating"? Parenting Related

So, here's the deal.  My son has been in this strange habit (for the past 3 weeks or so?)  of jamming his entire hand in his mouth and causing himself to gag.  He hasn't caused himself to throw-up, yet.  But, he has had some pretty awful gags.  He then proceeds to do this over-and-over again.

We've tried ignoring it (nothing), responding to it (nothing)... tell me it's a phase (and you lived through it) or give me some advice on how to make it stop.

  • It's a phase. Please don't call it bulimia. I know you're joking but that's a serious disease.

  • My DS has done this and thinks its hilarious. He hasn't done it in a while so I'm assuming it passes.

  • Why molars... what other symptoms are we looking at?  Does it go away once they get them?

    Agree.

DS did this when his molars were coming in. He was trying to jam his hand into the back of his mouth to sooth his gums I guess. I don't know how successful he was, but he did it pretty often and then just stopped one day.

This is good to know.  Thanks.

  • This would explain the lack of appetite and sticking his finger in his ear (occasionally) too.

  • My kids did this too and it had nothing to do with teeth.  It will stop eventually

  • A couple times C has thrown up after huge coughing fits.  So now, he thinks it's hilarious and "expected" that he'll throw up every times he coughs, to the point of running to the toilet to do so.  I think it's just a phase - it's funny for them and gets a reaction out of you.

  • My almost 16 month old son does this, too, and has been since about a year. Our pedi said it is completely normal and most-likely teething related. He is sometimes successful in actually throwing up. We think he is cutting molars because it was really bad this weekend and he was extra bitey. It is like having a gagging little shark running around.

I know he wants to bite down on stuff to ease the discomfort and it is not malicious but I can only clean up so much puke and be bitten so many times before I start to lose my cool.

     Good luck!
