anyone watching the Doctor's?

They were just talking about SIDS. They said that it is VITAL to put infants on thier back. My question...Conner won't sleep on his back. He automatically rolls to his side. What am I supposed to do about that?

Re: anyone watching the Doctor's?

  • I think the concern is tummy sleeping- not side.  DS sometimes sleeps on his side, too.  I always make sure his arm is out in front of his body, which makes it nearly impossible for him to get onto his tummy.  You could also buy one of those sleep  positioners if it would make you feel safer.

  • Well....I'm just not so sure. My 3 sisters & I were all tummy sleepers from day 1 (that's what the dr's told my parents back in the day (I'm talking 30+ years ago). We all made it. DD sleeps on her tummy sometimes. When she does, I do check on her, but I'm not going to freak out about it.

Oh - the sleep positioners are not any safer...they can actually create a suffocation hazard.

  • Logan HATES sleeping on his back, he automatically rolls to his side too.  My pedi said that it's just fine, so I'm not going to worry about it too much.  I just check on him a lot!
  • If you're really worried, the baby monitor I got has an alarm that goes off if the baby hasn't moved (to breathe) in a certain span of time.  I haven't had the chance to try it out yet obviously but the online reviews are really positive.  It's called the AngelCare monitor I think.

  • I'm not really worried over it. I hate how it seems that the back is the only option for a baby. Babies know what they like and don't like.
  • here's my 'bad mommy' take on SIDS.  I think it's TRAGIC that it happens but I don't know if there is anything one can do to prevent it.  If your baby likes to sleep on his side, I would just let him.  I am convinced that a baby has the same chances of dying from SIDS when they are lying on their back, in a cool room without a baby bumper in their crib, than one that is sleeping on their side, bundled up with warm blankets with a bumper in the crib.

of course with that being said, if Avery is on her side, I keep an extra eye on her.
