Car accident car seat question

So I'm coming home from groceries with 22monthold DD when we get rearended as we wait to turn into our street. We're all ok me, DD and 15week tummy nugget, got checked out by an ambulance, an OPP officer and our midwife came to check on the tummy nugget good strong heart beat. The other driver is completely at fault so no stress there AND the car looks to be damage free maybe a slight dent, air bags didn't deploy.

My question is do we need to replace DD's car seat? It looks ok, and DD doesn't have a scratch thank the Lord God. My DH thinks our insurance would cover it or the other drivers.

Has any one had to go through this?

  • I would replace it just to be safe. The other person's insurance should cover it. Glad you are all okay.

  • We went through this exact same thing almost two years ago. Definitely replace the car seat. The other driver's insurance should cover it.

  • Other insurance covers it so get the best and nicest car seat you can find! Go pricey!!
  • Replace it! If you want to you can call and check with your car seat manufacturer to see what they say. But I figure always better safe than sorry.
I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • I would replace too. Your insurance should cover it, and you don't want I mess with safety!

I'm glad everyone checked out okay!

  • Anytime there is a car accident, no matter how minor you think it is, you replace the car seats. The driver at faults insurance company will pay for them.

  • You are absolutely supposed to replace it.

  • Their insurance should cover the replacement however, it will depend on the car seats. I know there are some brands that specify they only need to be replaced in a serious car accident. Not sure how they determine that. I know Britax must be replaced after all forms of wrecks.

  • Actually, my Britax manual says only replace seat if airbags don't deploy.

I know it varies by car seat manufacturer.

And generally, they will just replace whatever car seat you currently have. They won't just give a blank check for any type of new carseat.

But if it makes you feel better for peace of mind, you are absolutely within your right to request a replacement, even if your manual says that one doesn't have to be replaced since the airbags didn't deploy. The worst the insurance company can say is no, and then you can always just buy a replacement yourself if it is important to you. But hopefully they won't give you any trouble!
  • i think it needs to be replaced.  even if it wasn't an awful accident, it's not worth the risk that it's been compromised.  i agree, someone's insurance should cover it, most likely their's since it was their fault no-question.   glad y'all are ok, what a hassle!  i'd order a replacement and turn it in to their insurance contact for reimbursement.

Should be his ticket for failure to stop in assured clear distance. Call your insurance company and let them handle it with his company. Glad your all safe.
  • I am glad all 3 of you are ok....I would get it replaced...never can be too safe!
