Cloth Diapering

Persistent Rash

I'm losing my mind over here! Our LO started to have some skin irritation probably around almost 2 weeks ago at this point. After a week in, and trying a few creams with little change, I brought him to the pedi office. They checked him out and said it looked like your normal diaper rash that could be from a change in the pH of pee and poop or teething because I hadn't changed anything about our wash routine or creams or anything. Well, here we are, another almost week later and he still has a rash that hasn't gotten any better.

We put him in sposies for a few days to see if it was something from the cloth irritating him and also lathered him up with aquaphor at the direction of the pedi. This resulted in no change. In the mean time I clean our dipes with GSE and bleach...he's back in cloth now still with a rash...

I'm at a loss...and I'm going to take him back to the pedi on Monday if it still is the same. What else could it be? Could it be yeast and the pedi was wrong?? Could it be a sudden reaction to the detergent (although putting him in sposies made it no better)? Any other tips or advice?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Persistent Rash

  • If the creams aren't working, could be yeast but that usually shows up in damp folds. If the weather is nice can you do some diaper free time? Get some air and sunshine for a few doses and see if that clears it at all? Good luck....

  • It could also be a food allergy. A rash shouldn't last that long unless LO is cutting multiple teeth or has yeast. If the pediatrician isn't being much help, get a second opinion anout it.

  • what I usually do is to wipe with wish hazel,,everytime I change his diaper and when the rash is a little persistent I give him a bath with olivo oil soap, then I put his cream, and for the next diapers change I will clean with the WH again and I will use the cream as need it.

  • I also say it could be yeast. Try some antifungal cream from the foot section at the store. It should clear up some in just a couple changes if it is.

  • Plug in a blow dryer next to your changing table and blow dry his bum on low setting every dipe change.  Then put on diaper cream.  We use Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm, but if the rash is bad I might do aquaphor and sposies just until it's gone. I know it sounds crazy but it really worked for us.  Just make sure you use low setting and not to close to his bum to avoid burns.
