I want to fire my OBGYN

I tried to call the office that is a group of 37 Doctors after hours to get the "On Call" Doctor. I've had this migraine for almost 8 hours and it is wearing on me. Well my doctor's office on call person is not available. Are you kidding me? So if I was bleeding or in labor I have no one I can count on to help me. The office people are snobby. I hate this place in general. My doctor is nice, but also very stiff.

Any suggestions how I can cut ties so I can enjoy and feel safe this pregnancy. I've never done this before.

Re: I want to fire my OBGYN

  • I would think your first step is to find a new OB.  I have a feeling that if you were in labor, L&D would be able to get ahold of one of the doctors from your group.  Did you leave a message for the doctor on call?

  • If you find another OB they will request your medical records. Its fairly uncomplicated. I would do it now while its still early in the game though. Having a migraine all day is not cool. I am so sorry for you :(
  • I'm also a ld nurse and since your practice is large they most likely are also very busy at the hospital. If the answering service can not reach them you can call the labor and delivery triage and talk to a nurse for advice. Also you can take Tylenol its safe during pregnancy. Most if the early bad headaches are from hormones. Good luck Ps. Private doctors are the way to go if you want specific attention

No it is just a recording saying the doctor is not available. They have no answering service apparently.

I agree, I don't think making the switch should be that difficult. You deserve appropriate and professional attention, and if this practice is too large and busy, then you have every right to switch. It may not be in their control, but you definitely have control over whom you choose to oversee your pregnancy.

  • I have had migraines for years and I don't know if you have a neurologist, but they would be your best bet for help with migraines while pregnant.  My OB is like, "take Tylenol".  Which, if you actually have a migraine you know that is ridiculous.  It's like offering tums to someone with stomach cancer for pain.  My neurologist still has me take norco (vicodin) if I get a migraine.  It's class C so it's not really "safe", but the stress of the migraine is worse for my body than the occasional norco is.  I only take it if I absolutely need it.  I'm 7 weeks pregnant, and yesterday was the first time since I became pregnant that my migraine was bad enough to need a norco.  If it's any help, migraines *usually* improve while pregnant.  Prior to getting pregnant I had at least one migraine a week, I've only had the one (yesterday) since becoming pregnant.  I hope you get some relief soon!!!!
  • Find a new OB, make an appointment, tell old OB you are leaving, have new OB ask for records.

I had to switch practices when I was pregnant with my first. I was already past 20 weeks and it was a pain. So much easier to do it now.

  • During My first pregnancy I changed doctors at 5 months due to stiff attitude though the new one wasn't much better in retrospect i emphasized a natural birth and she didnt support me during labor. My doc now seems very nice and open. Switching was easy I just picked up my records from the old and started seeing the new one
  • I did after my first pregnancy. I found a new doctor that I absolutely love. After that they just called my old OBGYN to get my medical records and that was that. I never got a call from my other office or anything. Shows how much they cared. One of the best decisions I ever made.
