Pregnant after 35

"Surprise!"

Hi!

I'm 'only' 34 & 1/2 but I'd like to connect with other almost-mid-life moms who might be able to relate to how I'm feeling.  I am a homeschooling mom to 3 children - ages 10, 6, & 5.

I just took a pregnancy test yesterday, and was shocked to see that it was positive!  I was under the assumption that I couldn't have any more children. I had an ovary removed b/c of a fibroid tumor, and I have severe scar tissue. After our youngest was born (nearly 6 years ago!) my Dr. told me that I was so riddled with scar tissue that she didn't know how I was ever able to get pregnant.

My 3 kids have entered a 'big kid' phase of life, and I have embraced it. For the first time in 10 years, I've been able to take walks by myself. Having a baby was the last thing on my mind. We've also moved several times in the last few years, and we've completely gotten rid of everything baby related.. I have absolutely nothing.

I believe that children are gifts from God, and I know that I'm going to be very thankful for this miracle - but right now I am just really kind of terrified.

Congratulations! I'm finding that being pregnant with non-little kids is MUCH easier-you have help! It's been a nice upside to being 'older' and pregnant. We planned this but it was still a shock in a way (it happened very quickly) so I can understand how you feel!

You have time to get stuff, summer tag sale season is almost here and that's a great way to get some stuff. Do the kids know yet? We waited a few weeks to tell ours, but they are really excited.

Congratulations! My son was 10 when my 2nd was born and he is the biggest help! He will be 12 when this LO is born and couldn't be more excited for another sibling. I always thought 10 years was too far apart to have children, but it's turned out pretty great for us. Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy!

Thanks for the warm welcome! We haven't told our kids yet. We are waiting until I can see a Dr. and verify that there is actually a baby growing in there. Surprise

I can completely understand what your feeling, I was 35 with a 13 11 and 9 y.o when I had dd 2 years ago, although she was planned it was quite a shock to my system to have another baby, like you,I finally had time to myself I was back to work after being home for 10 years and my husband and I were enjoying our time together. The older kids are an incredible help and it has been such a different expierence being a bit older and already knowing how quick the time goes,I have eembraced DD more than I did with my older 3. We decided to have one more, just so that she would have someone to grow up side by side with, I am due in Aug. With baby 5. Good luck and congrats!

I can relate.....although my kids were 12 and 14 when our "surprise addition" was discovered.  I also had gotten rid of everything.  Don't worry.....you'll warm up to the idea!  I never thought I'd conceive at 42....and deliver at 43!  My LO is coming via c-section on Tuesday, and the whole family can't wait to meet her.  GL!

I understand the surprise.  You're truly adding love to your life and to your family though. Congratulations!!

I'm a teacher.  One of my former students' moms got pregnant last year. Similar situation.  Her kids are all 10 + years old.  She's in her early 40's. While it was a huge adjustment, she's had amazing support from her older children.  Now she couldn't imagine it any other way.

Best wishes for an easy and healthy pregnancy!
