Babies: 3 - 6 Months

(N.B.R.) Essure vs. Tubal Ligation?

I am 27 years old and I gave birth to my first daughter 5 months ago and I would love to have one more child but I don't want to have to do it alone, since my daughter was 6 weeks old I have had to care for my daughter mostly by myself, my husband works but when he is home, he is doing things that he would rather do and not things to help me with his daughter. I don't want to hurt my husband or family but  I am considering having something premantly done to prevent me from having anymore children and I am wondering what would be better, a Essure or a Tubal Ligation? I have read and heard that a Tubal Ligation has a long recovery time but that is all and I am wondering if there is a website that I can go to and read more about both processes and come to a better decision for me and my family.

Thank you for any help you can offer me!

  • No advice but you may have better success with responses on the One and Done forum here. Just a suggestion!

  • My honest non snarky answer is that I think there are other steps you should take before making a final decision on your family planning.  It sounds like you and your DH have some issues and need a heart to heart because if you truly want more kids I would hate to see you make a permanent decision on that without laying that reality right out there for your DH and making him understand how his actions are impacting the family.  I know that's not at all what you asked and I may be off base because maybe you've done all that.  I just think 5 months in a lot of families are still finding their way and a new way of life and you're talking about making a big decision.  GL with whatever you decide.

  • I'm not sure about either but why not consider something like an IUD (Mirena) which is good for 5 years. You would be protected and you mentioned you would love to have another one possibly so that would not be so permanent. I would just really research all my options if I were you before doing something so permanent when it sounds like you could change your mind someday.

This and hormones from having a baby and if you are EBF make this moment not a prime time to make life altering decisions.   You should talk it over with your husband and family as it is surgery and surgery has it's risks, it is also very painful so be prepared for days after to be in a significant amount of pain.  There are probably many websites if you google it, and I'm sure you can youtube the procedure as well as I have found you can learn how to do anything by searching videos on youtube :) I can drywall a house with arches or change the alternator on my car or build a deck all by watching videos on youtube (I can't really but there are tutorial videos on anything on that site :)

  • I know this is not an answer to your question, but like pps have suggested, perhaps you should look into something non-permanent first. Sounds like you're not really ready to remove any chance of having another child (you're the one that said you'd love to have another) and you don't want to do anything now that you'll regret later just because you and DH are going through a rough patch- if you do something like Mirena that's good for 5 years, that gives you time to really think things through and see if things with DH get better once your DD is older...

We are in the one and done camp. I was high risk and had a miscarriage before W and the whole pregnancy was awful and the delivery was worse. After a lot of research and discussion we decided to do the paragard IUD. Its good for 10 years and reversible so if you ever do decide to have another baby with DH or someone else, you can have the IUD removed. With the Essure I believe you still have to use another form of birth control for at least 3 months after placement. A tubal is a surgery so you will have a hospital stay and bill. More chances with a tubal to have problems after the procedure as well. Take time to really think about why you would want something permanent if you think you might ever want more kids. What happens if you and DH work on things and in a year or two want another baby but you were hasty and did something permanent. Also think about if things don't work out with DH and you find someone else you want kids with but whoops you can't because you blocked off things down there. Think about the reasons you would do something permanent, is it really what you want or are you doing it to punish DH for not helping out.
