Unpopular opinions?

Re: Unpopular opinions?

  • DVDs, apps, etc are not educational for your infant, toddler, young child. We all need a break and sometimes these things help us keep our sanity. But don't fool yourself that they are a good thing for your child just because its good for you.

Agreed. My SIL sticks her baby in front of the TV all the time and she's not one yet. Says she has to watch her shows. Parents who use it as a constant babysitter need to rethink things. It's going to happen sometimes, but should not be the norm.

I think you might not understand what an UO is. You're gonna get countless people to agree with you.

Here's my UO. I feel my 3 year old has benefited greatly from watching TV and using Apps. She absorbs every bit she sees. She can recognize, name and correctly place all the states on the map due to an IPad app she loves. She knows more about dinosaurs then I've ever known. She has learned her alphabet and phonics. And really that's just the tip of the iceberg with what she has learned. I limit how much she watches to PBS and a few other Netflix shows.

Of course, we read to her all the time and interact with her while she watches tv. But we feel it absolutely is educational and has its place with moderation.

I agree with SuperTreesa on the apps. TV is so bad because there is no interaction. It just goes on, regardless of what your kid is "inputting" into the situation. Lots of apps are essentially just incredible children's books that have WAY more information on each page than a paper book could have, all tailored to giving information to your child based on what your child is interested in.  The model of click on something and then learn more about it does work. And there is no reason that a paper book about the solar system is inherently any better than a kids app about the solar system, where as they click on a planet, they see it moving and see real pictures of what the planet actually looks like from space, see stats about its size relative to other planets, temperature, etc. Since kids have to interact with those apps, they are active in the process, just like with paper books--not just passively watching the world go by.

Of course, if parents sit and watch a tv show with their kids and constantly say, "Wow, where is Dora going now?  Did Dora just walk outside?  Was she inside and just walked outside?  Where's Diego?  Is he behind the tree?  Etc.--all those questions and commentary spur interaction and critical thinking for your child.  Just because you are using a moving picture as a visual aid to spur that thought instead of using a paper book with non-moving pictures, it is not inherently bad.

The no screen time before two rule is mainly designed to prevent parents from plopping their kids down in front of the tv and walking away for hours at a time.  That happens more than any of us could imagine in this country.  And that is clearly not good for kids' development.  The AAP has taken a tough stance on this issue to try to ensure that abuses of these resources don't happen--for instance, now you don't see as many tvs in daycare centers, where in the 80s, they were all over the place because the thought was that kids should watch "educational shows."

Like everything in life and parenting, this is one about balance and finding out what works for you.

THIS, my child watches TV *GASP* ESP during the long teething days and I need to distract him and or get something done. I usually cuddle and watch with him, unless I am trying or need to get something done.

P.S. When I applied for my license I had to take a class before I could even apply.  Then the chief of police had to approve my application.  Then I was fingerprinted.  Then I had a full background check.  When I purchased my gun I had an FBI background check. To buy ammunition I was given a personal identification number that identifies me.  Where I live, you can't just walk into the store and buy one like a carton of eggs.

Agree, we have guns in our home, they are locked up high in DH's closet and we both know how to use ut properly and safe. It scares me the thought of us not being able to have them one day. Because there will always be a black market and those that want to harm will figure out how to get one.

I think getting your car washed is a waste of money.

This one is weird to me. Do you never wash your car? Or only wash it yourself? I consider keeping my personal belongings, such as my car, clean as a part of routine maintainance and ownership. I try to go every other to every third month, so certainly not an extravagent amount.

I live in the city so between not wanting to string three hoses together to reach the alley and the fact that the sewer lines dump directly into the river, meaning chemicals I would use would be dumped directly into the river, using a professional service is a lot better option. Not to mention, they are a heck of a lot faster at it than I would be and time is limited!

Oh and it you live in a place that uses a lot of salt on winter roads, you should absolutely wash your car at the first opportunity after the storm has passed. You will prevent a great deal of rust and deterioation. I have no interest in washing my car myself in 30-40 degree weather regardless of the reasons I mentioned above.

It is definitely your right to have a gun and I fully support that and I would never vote for that right to be taken away.  HOWEVER, I hate how people become so paranoid about the possibility of more gun control and those said people jump to conclusions that they will have their guns taken away and no one in America will be able to have them.  No one ever said that their guns will be taken away.  If you get your gun legally and are a responsible owner, have at it. I just don't see a need for a person to have certain types of guns.

Oh and don't think this is an UO but I really do hate when people post those stupid pictures on facebook with comments likening Obama to Hitler.  What the fluck people.  That is a gigantic jump and you my friend have lost it. Yes, you may not like the guy or agree with him, but that is very extreme.

It's different if you are washing it for maintenance reasons. You're right, that is needed for the reasons you stated (salt on roads, etc). I'm talking about washing it every single week and for vanity reasons....

If I was rich, I would totally wash my car every week!

I am and have been a supporter of reasonable gun access. And what you describe is what I'm aiming for personally. I grew up with guns, was trained by the military on how to use many more of them; I just don't understand why we have so much more guidance and regulation for cars, chocolate treats, and books in elementary schools than we do for guns.

  • I think that parents who take their kids to daycare even when one parent is off for the day are crap parents. I don't mean an occasional day here and there to get some things done without them under your feet but I mean an all the time situation. I know people who the dad or mom is off 3 to 4 days a week and the kids still go to daycare or spend the day with the nanny regardless. By the time they are picked up they only get a few hours a day with their parents. These same parents usually go out in the weekends and leave them then too. Why on earth wouldn't you want more time with your kid? What is the point if having them if you plan in outsourcing their upbringing constantly?
  • In response to pp, I finally see a reason to possibly buy an iPad now... I never knew there were so many educational apps out there for kids.

I only wash my car when I am picking up company from the airport.  The rest of the time, mother nature does the "washing".

We have a ton of guns for hunting purposes and this should be a FFC, but they are currently leaning in the corner of the walk-in closet in the baby's nursery next to a giant crate of ammo.  I know, I know.  We will get a safe to lock them up in a separate room, we just having gotten that far yet.

So my UO is that I think hashtags are stupid and annoying.  I also judge parents who hashtag pictures of their kids.  Especially bath pics.

Woot, woot! Loving you! I got mine only two years ago wouldn't have it any other way!  If more people carried we'd live in a nicer world.  lol

Op, I love the emphasis on the "ns" in gunnnnnnsssss. That is how we have said it in my house for years.

Going off of this, MH and I didn't tell anyone what we were naming DS until he was born, and plan on doing the same with this child.  We had a tough time coming up with a name for our son, and I really just didn't want to hear about the douche you dated in college or how your childhood dog had the same name.

It also had a little bit to do with him sharing a name with a protagonist on a failed Fox sitcom from the early 90s...  But, more to do with the whole peanut gallery thing.

    This.

not necessarily. Do you watch the news? There are crazies even in the safest towns. Look at newtown. Nobody saw that one coming. Why wouldn't you want to protect yourself and your child? More power to the lady with the gun in her diaper bag. I do it too. But then again my husband is a weapons specialist in one of the highest levels of the army and an advocate for protecting yourself with a firearm. So be it. There are ways to do it safety. Not everyone that owns and carries a gun is going to go on a shooting rampage. Can't rely on our government to protect us, it's your right to protect yourself.

  • imageNRyan55:

The gun argument, like any political argument makes me so stabby because of the lack of information people seek out.

If you think the government is going to take your guns away you are a flucking idiot and you should build a bunker to house your family and your tin foil hats.

    - I think TV/apps can be educational but should not be a child's only source of education.  DD is almost 2, and we still do not let her watch TV.  Aside from the occasional Elmo video on youtube (2 minutes here and there won't hurt when I need to get ready and she is being clingy, imo) and the times she had lice and we needed to distract her so we could pick it all out, we have not let her purposefully watch TV.  IMO, I do think the ADD/brain-devlopment argument makes sense.  And although it is just correlation/speculation at this point, I'd rather not risk it.

    - I do think it's funny thought because it seemed like 99% of my bmb while pregnant with DD was absolutely adamant about "no TV before 2".  I had never heard that and didn't decide to try and follow it until I had done research.  By the time our babies were 1, I would say the vast majority reneged that statement.

    - I will say that the no tv thing would be a lot harder if I were a SAHM.  Her being in DC the majority of the day makes it a lot easier.

    - I can see how washing your car could be viewed as a waste of water, but I don't think it's a waste of money.  To each their own.

  • My UO: I hate most chain restaurants like Chili's, Applebees, Olive Garden, On the Border, Cheddar's, etc... I think they serve crap food.  Most of it comes in frozen and is re-heated.  I'd rather go to a local joint that serves fresh food, made from scratch.  I also tend to not trust anyone's food opinion if they tell me one of these (or similar) is their favorite restaurant.
  • I have no problem with people touching my belly. So far the only people to touch my belly are MIL and of course DH and yesterday someone I work with asked me if she could touch my belly and I said of course. I don't find it weird in the least. And to be honest if some old lady at the grocery store gave me a pat I wouldn't mind either. So, I don't get all the people on here or all the shirts that say things like "Don't touch", etc. Baby bumps are cute and it is natural to want to touch cute things. So... go ahead world and touch away. yeah, I am pretty sure this is super UO. So, go easy on me guys!

What if it's a skeevy, sweaty, weird dude at the grocery store? Still ok?

PS- I see cute people out all the time- dudes with nice abs, girls with long soft flowy hair, yet I refrain from touching them. I think the 'baby bumps are cute' argument is kinda funny. Smile

  • I hate it when people whine and cry about their SO going away for a night or 2 on a trip; whether for work or with their friends.  Makes them seem dependant and needy.  It's 2 nights, get over it. No-one here has done it I am speaking in general. Then again I am a military wife that has been through DH going to schools/conferences in other states for days, weeks, and even months at a time and 2 deployments.

ETA:  Sorry, this ended up being more of a vent than an UO.

My UO: I hate most chain restaurants like Chili's, Applebees, Olive Garden, On the Border, Cheddar's, etc... I think they serve crap food.  Most of it comes in frozen and is re-heated.  I'd rather go to a local joint that serves fresh food, made from scratch.  I also tend to not trust anyone's food opinion if they tell me one of these (or similar) is their favorite restaurant.

Oo I am totally with you on that last part! I don't think I have met someone who says that a chain is their favorite restaurant but that would be super questionable.

I agree with this as well.  We recently had an office happy hour and the two restaurant choices were a local (delicious) wing place or applebee's.  Me being the pregnant lady craving hot wings all  the time voted for the wing place, but applebee's won out.  I haven't stepped foot inside an applebee's since my grandma was alive and lived across the street from one almost 10 years ago.  I was shocked that these ladies knew the menu front to back and ordered their food when the drink orders were being placed.  I was like um yeah I have to actually look at the menu to find the lesser of the evils.

OMG we should go around petting peoples' hair and six packs. That would be hilarious.

I worked with a lady who does this.  If she thought your dress was pretty, she would feel the fabric, one girl told me she felt up her thigh once (i think to feel her jeans? I can't remember).  It was a customer service job, so she was doing this to complete strangers as well.  Some people know no bounds.

I just plan to yell "stranger danger!" and run away.

I am a licensed gun owner and believe it is my right.  I am sick of people asking "Where did they get the gunnnnssss".  Listen, criminals get their hands on whatever it is they want.  Why are we all shocked by this?

Totally agree.  I carry my gun in the diaper bag when I go to the mall.  I refuse to be in a situation where I can't defend myself and my child against some ***.

I have my CCH.  I have carried a gun for years, know how to use it, clean it, correct a malfunction, and kill someone with it if necessary.  I hope the only times I get to use it are on the range, but I am prepared to use it elsewhere if necessary.

this is insane. the level of paranoia among gun owners is so scary to me.

  • I just thought of another one, and this one I know for certain is unpopular!

I am so ready for April to be over because I can no longer stand looking at the awkward maternity photos.  They are funny to look at here and there, but I'm over them, and some of them are just creepy.  Yes, poster who has the bloody baby coming out of the belly.  You're one.  Stick out tongueWink

I would like to enact the rule that we can pet cute six packs! Best idea ever. Anyone know where Taylor Lautner is?
