So last wednesday I got a BFN after our first IUI. I called the doctor and was told to come in Thursday for an u/s to check for build-up in my uterus. Sure enough, there was... My doctor scheduled my surgery for Monday; YES that gave us 4 days notice to plan around our work schedules!!!
Anyways, I went in yesterday at 8am and was home around 2:30pm. She mentioned catheter and balloon which I was thinking no biggie, but its definitely not what I imagined in my head! I have an intrauterine balloon filled with fluid in my uterus (filled so it stays in place) attached to a catheter running through my cervix and coming out of my V and taped up to my hip bone. Its one hell of a contraption! Luckily I get it removed tomorrow because it is quite awkward and uncomfortable... but there is no pain so thats good.
Once its removed tomorrow, I will go in every other day to ensure my cervix doesn't close again before our IUI this cycle. So it sounds like I'm doing my follicular u/s followed by dilation of the cervix or vice versa.
My doctor seems really optimistic that if my cervix remains open and my uterus stays empty up to the IUI, that we have a good chance this month. I'm much more optimistic than last month being I had fluid in there every u/s I had. She says if I can get pregnant and deliver a baby, that most likely would "fix" my cervix by breaking down much of the scar tissue that keeps closing my cervix.
My only though is, if it doesn't happen this month, how many more times do I have to have surgery followed by the IUI. I've already hit my max & deductible with insurance this year so surgery essentially isn't costing me anything more, but we do pay 50% of each IUI and there is a $15,000 max.
Lastly, on a funny note... When I was in recovery the nurse asked me what was going on so I told her I have a catheter attached to a balloon in to prevent my cervix from closing again from scar tissue. She said "oh, interesting. Where do you want me to attached your catheter bag?". I was like "I dont need a bag, its attached to a balloon inside me, nothing can come out. Its not attached to my bladder or anything like that." She then insisted on telling me I was wrong and that she would get my doctor in the room to explain to me I needed a bag. Luckily my doctor walked in at that very moment and told me no bag was needed because it wasn't attached to anything! The nurse seemed pissed that I was right, and that the doctor rolled her eyes a little but really...What did you expect to come out of an empty tube!?!?
