Pregnant after IF

Diapers.... cloth vs. disposable

With twins on the way, we are trying to find ways to save money wherever possible. Since daycare costs as much as I make working, I am probably going to stay at home during the day, and just work a part time job a few evenings a week and maybe the weekends.

So one area that DH and I are debating trying to save money in is diapers. Has anyone does the research on cost difference in disposable vs cloth. I know that once you buy the cloth diapers, they last until potty trained, but I also know that you have to wash them in both a hot cycle and cold cycle every time. Is the money I'm going to save really going to be that much when you figure in cost of water bill and time/energy doing laundry?

Has anyone else had this debate and made any decisions yet?? I just don't know what I want to do.

Married 8/14/10 * TTC since Aug 2010 * Met with RE in Feb 2012 * DH: low motility, low sperm count, elevated FSH * Me: Stage 4 Endometriosis * Laparotomy to remove endo in May 2012 * June 2012 - DH on Rx to hopefully increase count/quality * Re-tested sperm 10/22/12, count/quality have both dropped * IVF #1 w/ICSI * Transferred 2 beautiful embryos on 2/18/13 * Beta #1 3/1/13 - 636!!! Re: Diapers.... cloth vs. disposable

  • If you have an HE washer with the sanitary cycle they only have to be washed on that. Cloth is much cheaper than disposable. I haven't decided yet.

I've read that it costs about $600 for cloth diapers vs. about $1,500 for disposables, and that's just for one kid. If you eve

  • It's not an all or nothing decision. We did a lot of disposables when we were out and at night time. You will definitely save $, especially if you stay on top of the laundry. We live in Boston and pay for water. We actually did not notice our water bills

  • I think cloth diapers are cheaper if you wash them yourself. If you have a diaper service, I think it's a wash (no pun intended!).

We plan to use cloth for health reasons.

    Good luck!!!!

  • Defintley go to the CD board for some more answers.  We plan to CD and the stash of my dreams is around $600.  We plan to use almost all AIO.

Keep in mind that if you have more children down the road, you don't have to buy more diapers!

  • Great posts!  We're expecting twins and planning to CD -- might do disposables in the beginning since I anticipate they'll be smaller than a singleton and I'm not sure if I want to deal with finding the right CD combo/size for that time.
