How should I adjust the pay?

Right now we pay the nanny x amount of dollars/day.  If she's done before noon we'll pay half, after noon she gets the full amount.  It just always seemed easier vs. figuring it by the hour and it seems to even out as sometimes she's there a little late and sometimes she can leave early.  Typically it's a 7:30-5 day.

The kids are going to be starting preschool and will just be going in the morning.  The current debate is if we'll have them just go to the daycare at the school for the rest of the day or if the nanny will be picking them up and bringing them back to our house to watch them for the rest of the day.  (The school is not in the same town as my office so it's not feasible for me to just run them home on lunch hour and bus service is not an option either)

I'm just wondering how to adjust the pay since it will techincally be more than "half" a day if she picks them up at 11. Also wondering about gas reimbursement, etc. I had hoped to maybe find an inexpensive third vehicle for DH to use, I'd start using his vehicle, and she could use the minivan - but I'm not sure that will happen.  She seems ok with using her vehicle as long as three carseats will fit in hers.  (She also watches her grandson at our house - nanny is a relative)  I would buy the carseats for her of course.  Also, part of her pay was an extra $50/week for light cleaning.  With watching three kids the cleaning seems to get "lighter" all the time.  I'm thinking we'll have to discuss this as well. She mentioned she'll still want to watch the grandson at our house on the mornings the kids are at school so I'm wondering if with just one kid there if she could get more done? Or if we should drop the cleaning pay all together? Not sure how to approach that - any tips?

What have other done as far as adjusting the pay - having other people transport the kids, etc.?  Maybe just share your experience so I can see if I'm thinking clearly about the various factors.  Thanks!

Re: How should I adjust the pay?

  • I would figure out her "hourly rate" based on what she gets paid per day now and adjust accordingly for the shorter days.  As for the "light housekeeping", with the change in hours, I would take the time to outline what the "light housekeeping" du

  • I'd talk to her about the light housekeeping, and tell her what her duties as a nanny are. If you're paying her extra for cleaning, I'd expect her to actually do it.

  • I would figure out an hourly wage that is agreed upon between you and her.  Any "part" hours, I would round up or down.

Gas, I would pay her the current rate for mileage (right now I think it's either .55 or .54 per mile) - or figure out h

  • Keep in mind that your kids will probably have plenty of "non-school" days (holidays, sick days, etc) so I would keep your system of full day or part day rates assuming you're going to need a few full days per month,  but maybe make the part day rate
