Career Counseling Resources? (long)

Short version: does anyone know of inexpensive, free, or web-based career counseling resources? Something along the lines of the Dress for Success program, but for men?

Long version: 33 year old BIL has never held a stable, full-time job with benefits and has never been able to live on his own (has fluctuated between living with parents for free, living with DH/us for very low rent, or crashing on people's couches).  He has a self-professed lack of desire to learn anything or do anything, but wants a stable paycheck and decent benefits.  He has a high school diploma, and feels any further education or vocational training should be for people who "do it because they want to, not because they have to" and will be a giant waste of money.

He does not want a job where he is stuck at a desk, does not want a job that involves physical labor, does not want a position where he has responsibility (i.e. police, EMT, fire fighter, etc.).

He thinks his problem is that he just hasn't found his "calling," and has blown many job interviews by being overly honest about what he wants out of a position instead of talking about what he could contribute to the company.

What I would like to do is shake him and tell him to start acting like an adult and take responsibility for supporting himself, but I need a gentler method of conveying this...... He has asked DH and I for some career advice and is coming over tonight to discuss.

Does anyone know of any good resources to help people figure out what they might like to do/be good at for a career and/or job counseling???  I had plenty of this through high school and college, and he seems to have missed out on these types of things.

  • I was going to suggest the unemployment office may provide career counseling. I am not sure they would have surveys for career assessments (where they would base scores on interest).

    You can ask.

  • Our state agency that provides all this is called Job Service, so that's something else he can look for.

And many public libraries subscribe to a database called Learning Express. It has things like SAT prep for students but also has continuing e
