Last night my DD was screaming in pain and I discovered a very red little bum (looks like sunburn almost.) She screamed for the next few diaper changes (although I began using disposables and Desitin as soon as I discovered the rash.) Does this sound like ammonia burn? I didn't notice an ammonia smell at the time, although when I smell that diaper today I smell it a bit. What causes ammonia burns? I am new to CDing and she has been wearing them maybe 3 days so far when I discovered this.
I have hard water and am using homemade cloth diaper detergent. I also have a front loading HE washer which I run a cold rinse, warm wash with a teaspoon or two of detergent and followed by another rinse. I am at a loss for what to do about this. I do not want to cause her any more pain from my stupid mistakes. In the meantime, we are using sposies but I'd like to get back in my CD's pain free soon! Any advice is appreciated! TIA!
Re: Ammonia Burn?
Your diapers aren't clean. A teaspoon of homemade detergent in hard water is a placebo - it's not doing anything at all.
You can either try using a LOT more detergent - I'd up it to 2-3 tablespoons, or you can switch to something with more clean
