Homeschooling

Homeschooling during summer/year round or no?

What are you doing or planning on doing when your LO is old enough. Will you take summer "off" completely from academics, continue through the summer or take it easy and have a light schedule?

I think we will continue on a light schedule as a "year round" school and then take more time off for Christmas break, vacations, etc. without getting behind.

Re: Homeschooling during summer/year round or no?

  • I plan to go year round and just take long breaks during certain months - during the summer when we either have vacation plans or need a break because the weather is so nice, during December to celebrate Christmas, during Spring when the weather breaks and we want to get outside/to celebrate Easter, when DH gets time off work, etc.

We're trying it out this year to see how it goes.  Another factor in this decision for me is my work schedule.  I work part-time two days a week and although I don't start work until 10ish, leaving us time to do some lessons in the morning, I don't want to feel rushed to get stuff done on those days.  So, we'll probably only be doing school full-time three days a week and part-time on my work days.  We're going to need to go year round as they get older to make up for that time.

  • We went year round but were allowed breaks when we discussed it with our parents.

  • We do year round. During the summer, we just do abbreviated schedule. It also allows longer breaks thru the year.
  • We are planning to go year round, but take breaks when we want and need. My DD has some days when she just has ZERO attention span and those days will just make us both miserable trying to learn. By allowing no school days I am hoping to avoid meltdowns and frustration.

  • We will be doing school year round with breaks whenever we need them, for vacations, camps/activities, or just our sanity.  And like PP, some days just aren't meant to be school days, so it's nice to have that flexibility.

  • I guess I'm in the minority.  We do the standard school year with summer break.  I NEED a summer break.  We do some math review and lots of reading in the summer.

  • We will probably follow DH's teaching schedule for breaks and do interest led learning in the summers.

  • We are starting next year, but I'm thinking we will probably school year round to facilitate longer breaks in the winter months when the weather is nicer (we're in FL).  But...DH is a teacher and thus has a typical summer break, so we may stick to that and spend summers traveling in our "rustic" (i.e.- OLD) RV.

this is my plan.  I will probably be working 3 days a week.  I also plan to have them do lessons at least some of the time I am at work, with my mother.

  • We did the traditional school year with summer breaks. But over the summer we still did lots of reading or internships or other interest led types of learning. It was nice to have a break from the routine 3R's for a little while to relax.

This sounds like what we would do.
