How far from the hospital are/were you?

I REALLY loved the hospital where Reagan was born and I REALLY have my heart set on having our next baby there (starting TTC next month).  I'm also about to switch from my current OB to a midwife that is associated with that hospital.

My dilemma is that we are moving in a few months, and that would put the hospital (and midwife) about 45 minutes away.  Am I crazy or is that OK?  (FWIW, I was induced with Reagan but labor was only 6 hours start to finish--I don't want to have baby #2 on the side of the road!!!)

How far are/were you from the hospital you delivered at?

Re: How far from the hospital are/were you?

  • I'm spoiled. .4 of a mile. Yes. POINT four. I could have walked in a pinch!
  • I can walk there in 15minutes.  2min drive.

  • Ours was almost 2 hours away, and it was the closest one. We lived WAY out in the desert. It made me nervous. It's pretty much the reason I was induced. I was already past my due date and if there had been some sort of emergency, we were just too far away, even by helicopter.

  • My hospital is about 40 mins without traffic.  Its in the city and if its during rush hour it could take close to 2 hours to get there.  However, I will not switch.  I had a wonderful experience there and its a teriffic hospital.  My OB says that I have no reason to worry.  If there was an emergency there are other hospitals closer that she is affiliated with that I could detour to if necessary.
  • Less than a mile. DH walked home the morning after DS was born to shower and change (sice I forgot to pack him a bag. Oops)

  • With my first DD, the hospital was almost 25 miles away, and it was a 40 minute drive when I did go into labor.  I SOOOO wished it was closer while I was in labor!!!

The new hospital I'm delivering at is 10 minutes away.

  • I was about 45min-hour from the hospital with my first pg!  My biggest fear was having a baby in the car on the Mass Pike!  So, this time I switched OB's and now the hospital is only a couple minutes away.

It was probably an irrational fear....everything was fine in the end!

  • About 20-25 minutes.  If you were induced then you have no idea what "normal" labor time would be.  Both pg, I stalled out so they broke my water and literally in one hour I got to 10 cm (from about 4-5cm), and with my first pushed for 13 minutes, my second pushed for 9 minutes.
  • 10 minute drive.

I don't think that 45 minutes is too much.

  • 45 minutes.  There is one closer if I'd needed it in an emergency, but they JUST started delivering babies the month DS was born.

  • If I had dd before 35 weeks it was about an hour away if she was after 35 weeks then 45 mins away.  We are ttc soon and the hospital this time is 5 mins.
  • We live about 40 miles away from the hospital where I had both of my girls.  It took about an hour or so to get there each time I had my appointments.  The same for getting there for the real thing.

I don't think it would be a big deal.  I was having contractions 5 minutes apart when we left for the hospital with A and had a csection about 5 hours later.  If I were you, I would have my appointment with my doc and tell him what your thoughts and concerns are.

  • With Keira my hospital was about 45 minutes away without traffice and a little over an hour with traffic.  But that is where I was confortable.  There were closer hospitals but I didn't want to go to them.
  • 15 mins. 10 if I drive not DH.

I worry about this too, my DD was born so quickly I am worried about getting to the hospital in time for #2.

  • About an hour but thats the closet one to us.
  • It would be about 30mns away if they weren't digging up every single road in my state.  So, it's about 45mns now.

I have to say....the ride to the hospital when I was in labor with my 1st was horrific.  Every second was torture.  I also headed to the hospital at 6am - right in the middle of rush hour.  Thankfully, traffic doesn't head in that direction, but I would have been angry if it did!

  • For DD#1 we were 30min to 1hour away depending on traffic.  For DD#2 & now #3 we are about 10min away w/ traffic..less w/out traffic/red lights.

  • OK, so I totally feel better.  I guess I'm not crazy.  I really feel comfortable at this hospital, so I'll plan to stay there!  Here's hoping to not having Doug in Skyfox videotaping my delivery!  ha ha ha
  • 1st 30 hr

2nd we moved farther out about 40-45 min (I had a schedule c-section).  There is a small town hospital 20 min (in the opposite direction) if the need arised....

  • About 45 mins to an hour during peak traffic.  Thankfully my water broke at 5am so we were on the road before 7 and it took us about 25 mins to get there.  I only had a mild contraction before we arrived!  We actually have about three hospitals closer but my OB was at this one and it was between work and my house so that made it the best choice.

  • Both of the hospitals here are within 10 minutes, sometimes less.

But, I dont think that 45 minutes is bad.  It might just change how long you labor at home before you go to the hospital.  But if you really like it then I think it is ok.

  • I LOVE Doug Meehan!  Ha!

I wouldn't mind him hovering over me.....although, if he's going to get a look at my lady parts, I'd like them to be at their most attractive and that just ISN'T!

I watched him while I was in labor....he didn't make the pain go away, but he sure was a nice distraction!

  • Ours was 40 minutes away, and it wasn't a big deal.

    Exactly!

  • mine is just a little over a mile from our house.  It was a 5 minute drive, tops.  We joked that we might have to get a snowmobile for DH to take me there ;)
  • I was 40 minutes without traffic, but rush hour is bad.  I ended up switching OB's for this pregnancy.  I didn't want to but DS was born in 4 hrs and a hospital 40 mintues away is to far for comfort.  Our new hospital is 3 mintues away.

  • 80 miles...or 1 hour and 15 minutes (most of it was expressway driving).  All my kids were born there.  I LOVE that hospital!  My ob/gyn group is also there.
  • 30-40 minutes.  depends on traffic.
