Cover letters

Does anyone have some good advice on writing cover letters, particularly the opening?  This is something I have always struggled with and want to write a few great letters for jobs I'm really interested in.  I look at examples of cover letters and get some ideas from those, but I'd love some more input/advice.  Thanks!

    1st paragraph- about the position you are applying for. For ex: Dear HR , I am responding to your add found on xxx for the yyy position.  I feel I would be a great addition to your team,etc...

    2nd paragraph - about yourself. identify similar
