Any DCs ever have ringworm?

I think DD may have it and I have an appointment today to get it looked at. The things I've read about online say that it's unusual for an infant to get it. Just wondering if it's really that rare......

Re: Any DCs ever have ringworm?

  • Mine never have, but if you have pets that go outside it wouldn't surprise me.

(FYI: It's a fungus, not an actual worm. You can treat it OTC with Blue Star Ointment until you can get to the pedi. You DO NOT want it getting in anyone's hair follicles. Trust.)

  • DD has never had it but I have.  I used to work at a humane society and we would get cats in w/ it all the time and since I was handling the cats so often I usually ended up w/ it regardless of how much handwashing I did.

Do you have pets?  If you suspect that's what your DD's has I would call your Dr. b/c I'm not sure if they can have the over the counter ointment on their skin.

  • I have an appointment at 2:30p to get it checked out. I do have cats and dogs but only the dogs go outside. I'll be interested in knowing how to prevent it in the future; I saw some crazy nasty pics online on what it can look like if it gets "in" your hair!!

Right now it's smaller than a dime-sized circle, on her shoulder. Inside the circle, it is not red nor puffy....just the outer ring is, and even that is not what I'd call puffy.

I had it before, too, but can not remember the specifics of it for the life of me!! All I remember was it took forEVER for it to go away.

  • Kate got it at the pediatric cardiologist's office!  I just put Lotrimin on it for 10 days and it went away.  No biggie.

Oh bless you for the optimism!! I'm feeling awfully anxious about it.

  • No, but infants CAN get it; it's a contagious fungus like athlete's foot. ?My brother has it currently and my mom won't let him come see the baby until he's over it. ?He is almost a month old and my brother has never seen him, except for pictures.
  • Babies can absolutely get it. My DS who is 4 currently has it and has had it for over a month (have been treating it that long). We are obviously not able to keep him away from my 4 month old so, it is possible he will get it as well. It is not as horrible as it sounds or it seems as long as you take care of it. We just put Lotrimin on it every night after his bath and keep it covered with a band aid. So far my baby has been around it for the month that he has had it and has not been infected yet.

Also, have a friend who is a vet. She says that it can come from animals but also just as easily can come from dirt, touching someone who has it, etc.

  • An update:

It doesn't seem to be ringworm afterall. Doc said it looks more like an eczema rash. I'm wondering if, if it's a rash why it's only in one teeney spot? But if it doesn't go away with the ointment he prescribed, I'll be sure to follow up.
