Dr. prescribed Category C meds??

I'm 15.5 weeks along right now. I called my doc due to some difficult constipation that has not let up over the last month and has resulted in some rectal bleeding (sounds sexy, huh?). The nurse called me back and quickly, and without many questions, told me to take Colace (OTC stool softener) and prescribed me Hydrocortisone AC -lucky for me it's a suppository ;).

My concern is that after I brought it home and consulted Dr. Google, I found out both are Pregnancy Category C. And the Hydrocortisone tests on animals have resulted in fetal abnormalities. I kind of feel the nurse was quick to prescribe this over the phone without explaining the risks involved. I will likely call them back to hear their explanation of any risks involved tomorrow, but I was wondering if it is common for Docs to prescribe these? Anyone else take these before during pregnancy?

  • I took Colace with DD and she is fine. I'm taking 2 cat C drugs this time and I'm not concerned.

  • My OB has colace listed as safe to take during pregnancy. If your concerned call the OB or the pharmacist.

  • Also, what would you do if your doc prescribe a Cat C? Trust he doc knows what they are doing? Or trust your instinct that you don't think the risk justifies the benefit?
  • I have taken colace off and on this entire pregnancy at the direction of both my RE and my OB.  I don't know about the other one but I feel safe taking colace.

  • My OBs office has Colace listed on the list of medications they give you at your first appointment. And, I would trust the judgement of your doctor over the internet. The websites you were looking at were probably not the most reliable. If you are concern

  • Many category C meds are taken by pregnant women all the time. I know colace is pretty commonly prescribed and same with hemorrhoid creams, such as the hydrocortisone. If you are concerned though, I would call and get some reassurance from the doctor.&nbs

  • Colace is on my approved med list too. I've taken it on and off this pregnancy and also with my DD. The cream I can't speak of. A category C med is safe when the benefits outweigh the risks.
I also would trust your doctor. They wouldn't have prescr
  • I haven't taken either of those, but my doc just prescribed Percocet, which is a Category C, for my combination migraine/tension headaches. I didn't know it was Category C until I got home.

  • If you're worried, don't take it. Try a natural approach, changing your diet and exercise regularly. Or take metamucil, you can take it up to three times a day. Its just phsyllium fiber.
  • I have been taking collace two times a day for a couple weeks since i got on zofran. Its on the safe list like everyone else said. I also have been drinking apple juice, tho i heard prune juice works too. Also drinking decaf coffee to move things along. S
  • Yes it's fine. I was given cat C and doc said as long as its not used a ton and for. Very long time you will b fine. They wouldn't give it to you if it would cause harm to baby.

  • i am on Celexa which is Category C and doc said it's fine. C means there is not enough evidence to concretely say it's okay but it's not necessarily bad.
