So the spicy food DID do the trick! Those contractions I was feeling last Thursday ended-up being the real deal. They started at 8:30pm and I managed to cope until about 5:30am the next morning, at which point they got a bit too intense and, after the third call to Triage (who didn't sound convinced that my contractions were close enough together), we decided we should head to the hospital just in case. Right before we left, I noticed a bit of bloody show, but my water still hadn't broken.
Upon arrival, I was checked and was surprised to hear that I was dilated to 6-7 cm already. Got my IV and epidural (at LAST) .... and long story short ... ended-up requiring a vacuum extraction since after 3 hours of pushing, baby wasn't progressing down the birth canal and her heart rate was dropping.
Not the experience I'd anticipated (all heck broke loose after her drop in heart rate, and my doctors along with the OB on duty at the time were all called-in along with extra nurses), especially as it nearly ended in a c-section.
When she came out, she was found to have the cord wrapped once around her neck, and it was suspected that I'd had a placental abruption at some point during the labour and delivery process.
Anyway, our little Elena was 8lbs 8oz, born EXACTLY on her due date of March 15, and we are already at home getting used to each other. I was anticipating having to be induced sometime this week after being told I was having a big baby (and no other signs of progress like losing my mucous plug or my water breaking), so it just goes to show that you just can't predict when your LO is going to arrive!
Wishing all you other March mommies a healthy and happy labour and delivery experience!
