I have a dumb BFing question

I'm ashamed to even ask this as a STM...but if your milk doesn't come in for a day or two (DS was 3 days old when mine came in), your baby gets all the nutrition it needs from colostrum?

I vaguely remember DS only taking milli-something (whatever measurement it was) at a time of formula for the first day or so. Is this comparable to the amout of colostrum our bodies produce?

Re: I have a dumb BFing question

  • Baby's tummy is SUPER tiny the first few days before it starts to grow.  They will get everything they need from colostrum the first few days :)

  • yes, colostrum should be all they need...however some babies aren't satisfied by that. I had to supplement with a little formula for the first few days because Callie wasn't happy with what I was providing.

  • My milk didn't come in until 2 days after delivery...DS seemed satisfied with colostrum only.  I am terrified of BFing again, it's a scary thought and it ended not going all that well with DS at about 10 days old so I EPd for three months.  That
  • Thanks ladies. I assumed colostrum would be enough, seeing how that's nature's way of feeding our offspring; I just thought I'd run it past other STM+ moms who would know first-hand.

  • Yup- colostrum has everything they need and their tummies are super tiny!  The nurses at the hospital really encouraged letting DS nurse very frequently because the more he sucked, the more it would stimulate milk production....and it really did for

I also read somewhere that babies don't feel hunger for four days after delivery, because they still have so much from us. I don't know if I totally buy th

Two days is actually pretty quick, I think it can take up to a week.  I'm actually not sure when mine came in because I never got engorged or was even able to hand express any for several weeks.  I did supplement on days 3-4 (long story), but

  • They supposedly get what they need from the colostrum. But remember they also lose a bunch of weight after being born and I think that could be related to the milk not coming in yet...though it's also just that they have extra water weight when born.
