WWYD? Dying relative... 1h30 from hospital.

Here's the back story...

SO lost his paternal grand-mother one year ago tomorrow... It was a very hard time, they were very close and he barely made it to the hospital to see her.

This past week, we have learned that his 84 y-o maternal grand-mother is in the hospital, with a heart condition, AND cancer. She might not make it through the needed operation for a pacemaker and she refuses cancer treatments. She IS 84, and I can only imagine how overwhelmed and tired she might be.

The hospital she is at (and will stay at until the end) is an hour and a half from our hospital. They have a L&D division there and they could monitor me or admit me for delivery, but my worry is on our way to and from that hospital...

I am 38 weeks and 3 days, will be around 39 weeks when he goes to see her, and he wants me to be there with him. There is nothing I want more than to support him and see her at least this one more time before baby comes, but I'm wondering what you would do in my position...

I do have an OB appointment tomorrow and I will ask her if it's reasonable given our circumstances...

What would you do?

  • I would go....as long as you're not staying for the entire day/overnight, I think it's fine. You could reasonably not deliver until 42 weeks (or you could deliver tomorrow, never know).

If you get there and aren't feeling "right" or start going

  • I would go because this could be the last time you see her. 39 weeks isn't a definite time you will go into labor, hell... you may last a few weeks more. But if the hospital there has a L&D you are comfortable with that is a plus. I would just tell

  • I would definitely go. Think about it- most obs want you to wait until you've had intense contractions 5 mins apart for an hour before going in. And even then, most women are in the hospital for awhile before pushing. In all likelihood, you would have ple
  • Under normal circumstances, I would go, but an hour and a half commute is no big deal to me.  If I were having any complications, I would not (and I've had complications with both pgs, so in my case, I wouldn't make the trip).  But if you've bee

  • I would go. Chances are... You'd be able to get to one of the hospitals to deliver.

  • My hospital is an hour away from my house so I would be able to easily rationalize the extra 30 minutes each way. If you're worried I would suggest printing off your prenatal records and being aware of any closer hospitals.
