Has anyone with a history of very preterm delivery been offered steroid shots at 24 weeks in a subsequent (relatively uneventful) pregnancy? My doctor says it will be an option beginning next week, when I reach 24 weeks. I am very anxious about delivering in the immediate future based on my history but there is no real indication to suggest that I am at high risk for delivering during the next few weeks this time around. I am contracting fairly regularly but my cervix isn't changing, thankfully.
I know that after a week, the steroids lose maximum effectiveness, so if I do decide I want the shots, timing is important to maximize their efficacy. On one hand, if G-d forbid I got into labor in the next few weeks, the steroid shots could make a life/death difference but on the other hand, it seems more logical to hold off since placing my anxiety aside, I think I am much more likely to deliver between 30-34 weeks than in the very near future.
I am just wondering if anyone else has struggled w/ the best time to do the shots, especially if like me you have a poor history but are not in known imminent danger of delivering. Thanks!
Re: timing of steroid shots
I received the shots with my twins just a day before delivery, not really giving them time to work. This time I have been in and out with PTL, but just received my shots at 30-31 weeks. They said they can give them sooner and then follow up with a boos
